![]() | Need Help Opening up Bach Strad I looking for advice on how to make my Bach 180ML 37 more free blowing. I bought the horn new in 93 and it worked great since I was young and in school and everyone that has played it compliments the intonation and overall sound. When I started gaining my upper register and experience I always felt like the horn had too much resistance. I do have a hefty set of lungs and I am afraid I might need a large bore trumpet, but really don't want to give up my strad. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to make it feel more "open". It has the standard 25 leadpipe and been thinking about changing that and/or the Tuning Slide. Any help would be appreciated! |

![]() | Re: Need Help Opening up Bach Strad I would definately have a pro do it. My old marching/jazz horn was a Yamaha 4335GS ML bore with a reverse leadpipe and that thing was alot easier to play in the upper register with the same mouthpiece. But that was sold when I finished college. |

![]() | Re: Need Help Opening up Bach Strad Read Jens' Yamaha Trumpet Rant in this forum. Resistance my be your friend. I used to play and still do ocassionally, a Getzen Eterna. This horn is very free blowing. I swithced to a Schilke B1 about 3 months ago. It is supposed to be free blowing, but I found it had more resistance than the Getzen. My range has never been better, and I don't work as hard up there. Just a thought. |

![]() | Re: Need Help Opening up Bach Strad I've heard the 43 leadpipe is more open, you might want to check into that. I don't think that would be too expensive, but I really don't know. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Need Help Opening up Bach Strad "resistance" is a very controversial subject that has as much to do with your body use as with the hardware. Large and medium-large bores have no influence on the freeness of the blow. That is a myth that keeps coming back. The leadpipe, bell design, mouthpiece design all contribute to that which we call resistance - NOT THE BORE SIZE. Generally, if you think that the high register is "stiffer" on your horn, YOU are not relaxed and hardware change will probably not really help. If you are relaxed upstairs, the horn is not that significant! The single biggest factor for "resistance" in the upper register is pressure on the upper lip not the wrong horn. Instead of going on a hardware safari, you will gain more from a couple of yoga lessons or some professional embouchure tuning. I know that this is not what many people want to hear. The magic of a new trumpet and the advertising promises are much often stronger then the urge to dissect ones own playing........................

![]() | Re: Need Help Opening up Bach Strad Why not, before investing in equipment etc., invest in some lessons with a fine legitimate teacher and make sure that you are not doing something to cut down on the efficiency of playing high. I am not saying go to one of the folks who plays screech with some special flat mouthpiece, but a legitimate teacher who can help you. Very possibly a college prof. or a symphony player. |
