![]() ![]() | Re: New Guy Wanting to Learn Zack, Welcome to TM. I'd recommend that you rent a trumpet if a nearby music store is available and ask the folks to recommend a teacher. You will need a horn and a teacher. Even then, you can't "shortcut" things. You'd be wise to listen to Old Lou and others. You could look for a used horn to buy (Bb), but until you know what trumpet works best for you....a rental is probably better. I would stay away from a C trumpet until you learn to play the Bb as the C trumpet will have another set of issues to learn. Why complicate your life so early? As you truly progress, you will have a better knowledge of what trumpet will be best for you and your stage of musical development. There is no way that you will become a capable instrumentalist apart from what Old Lou and others have described. Best wishes, Lloyd Last edited by lmf; 10-06-2008 at 10:26 PM. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: New Guy Wanting to Learn A rental is a terrific idea, because you'll have extra cash to pay a teacher. You need the essentials, like Oldlou said, no matter what you envision as your musical destination. If you read music already that is great, it is the most essential essential. It will be hard at first to learn trumpet - fingers are easy, but lips, tongue, and air are not. It can and probably will be frustrating. So if you go for it be prepared, for it is work, hard work. Casual approaches just won't cut it. But you can do it, Zack, if you commit yourself to it and that's where you must begin. Miles played mostly on a Martin Committee trumpet. Buying one now is difficult and expensive (because Miles drove up the demand).
