new horn advice

hi im looking to buy a new horn... ive played the trumpet for about 12 years and then i stopped all together for about 3 to focus on my college studies... ive recently picked up playing the horn again and just joined a ska/jazz/reggae band ... im looking for a horn to allow me to have a good range, project, and be very precise... from what i have read so far i am leaning towards getting a small bore schilke but i would like to hear what other have to say before i make the investment... i have played on a bach omega all of my life but it was recently damaged and even after getting it fixed at the shop the third valve sticks now... i am willing to spend up to 3 grand on a new horn so please share your thoughts and feelings on the horn i should buy to play this type of music and further my studies of jazz music

Re: new horn advice

Bach Strad, Schilke, Getzen, Kanstul, Yamaha, B&S, Stomvi, Edwards, Selmer, Coutois, Olds, Holton, Conn, Martin.............................

None of the above have good range, precision or projection. If the player has it, they will let it "shine" through though. If you have 3 grand, maybe you should think about a trumpet AND a flugelhorn.

My suggestion is to take 6 months and play everything that you can get your hands on. after that time, you have the market down and can make a superior choice. There is no decision so gratifying as the ones made with NO COMPRIMISE

Re: new horn advice

What else can be said.... rowuk said it all.

3 grand = Trumpet & Flugel. Try them all (new and used), yours will let you know when you play it.

Cheers

Re: new horn advice

I also herd that a Yamaha Xeno was a good trumpet for jazz because of how light it is. My uncle has one that plays jazz day in and day out non stop! Plus Xenos are... I guess in your case, cheap.

On the other note... Do you want to sell your old trumpet to rack up some MORE money? If you do, then contact me.
Thanks!

Weight has nothing to do with whether it is good for one genre or another.

Re: new horn advice

I thought that they did that to make it sound looser and easier to play jazzy music. Was I wrong?

Re: new horn advice

See my new thread in the trumpet forum!

I would not recomend a Xeno!!!!

If you want to go nuts and spend all of 3k on a Trumpet, from a guy I described on my new thread, Get a Flip Oakes "Wild Thing". Flip also produced a "Celebration" model. Kanstul makes these for Flip. My first trumpet player freind has played them all, and beleive me, he would not talk you out of a Schilke, I'm telling you what he settled into, after so many years.

The guy on letterman plays a "Wild Thing".

This is true, I've admired the band, "LENKA". In the live performance I saw, they are probably the same genre as the OP plays in. The keyboard player was always pulling a wild looking horn out for a solo. I cannot pin his name, the studio cd reports several horn players throughout. I'm going to guess his name was Maxime Saint Pierre ...As a live show, he was pulling those horns like a magician pulled a rabbit..He has large bushy afro like hair..... It was entertaining, always a different horn, some even dwarfed a flugel.

You might like this band, "Lenka".

You are wrong. A person makes the trumpet play 'jazzy' music. A trumpet can't swing, nor can it improvise, nor can it play lead.

I know that there are a lot of brands/models that have a certain 'class' appeal and which cost a lot of money. But a review of many, many threads in this forum will strongly indicate that the name and/or the price do not necessarily guarantee success with a horn. When I was shopping for mine (my first one), I went to a number of stores and touched/played many different models. One that I tried was the Cannonball and it was about as exotic a model as you can find. Some find it a bit 'gimmicky' due to the stone that they place on the pipe near the third valve (they claim it affects the tone because it is near a vibration node which it helps to stabilize). But it was a very nice playing horn and looks very sexy. It was, however, priced somewhat above what I was prepared to pay. The store owner finally told me what he plays personally (and he also has Bach, Yamaha, Getzen and most other top brands). I tried it and found it to be eminently playable. I bought one and have found that it really responds to different mouthpieces by changing character to play solo, lead, jazz, ballads, or anything else very well. It was also in my price range. It is an Andreas Eastman and it is very well made. The only problem is that I have to tell people that is costs over $1000 or they think it is a student horn (I'm not lying if I include all of the 'overhead' that I incurred while shopping for it).
So, if it is playability and flexibility and adaptability - not ego building - that you want, you may want to look at these two brands. Both are real sleepers as far as I am concerned.
