Re: New Horns

Thanks guys! I am probably older than Ed and Glen and CBK, but not older than OLDLOU, my mentor and guru. I just turned 67 with no immediate damages known from a delicious birthday Apple pie made by my wife, Deb. Glad Ed found a compatible MP fairly easily.
Vintage Lemar and Lyrical trumpets - eBay (item 140355187639 end time Nov-01-09 17:31:21 PST)

Here are the ones I got, mentioned in an earlier post. Stencils that should be workable.

Yeah, these two cornets are alot of fun to play. I got a chance to put the Harwood through the ringer for a couple hours last night and it played just as well as the LeFevre... considering they're clones the only difference I felt was in the valve action.

The Harwood is very badly tarnished though. Both horns are silver plated, is it possible to strip that silver plating down to the raw brass? I have no clue how silver plating works...

Do a search on aluminum foil - baking soda anti-tarnish bath, and give the horn one. Very little work, and it will help clean out the inside too. Essentially it reverses the deposition of sulfur into the silver (silver sulfide is tarnish) and sticks it on the foil, leaving all the silver where it belongs.

Fun with science!

Thanks, Glen. What's even better, she is an excellent flutist , pianist and our church organist, so we have enjoyed making music together for 38 yrs this month, plus her cooking and seamstress skills. I always wonder how I got so lucky, not that is something she would remind me about.

yeah, after i posted my query i did a quick search on that. how effective is it? the "tarnish" that's on the Harwood almost looks like a layer of rust... but neither brass nor silver rust. Do they? Or is that truly just tarnish?

Question Re: New Horns

curious... can the aluminum foil required be the pan? what if i were to use a foil roasting pan instead of a plastic tub with a sheet of aluminum in it? would that serve the same purpose?

EdCon,

Don't know if you have seen the Curry Vintage cornet mouthpieces:

Curry Precision Mouthpieces | Cornet Mouthpieces

It might be an acceptable replacement for the original that won't tire you out...

Hope it works for you. I like the way it sounds and feels on my early 1900s Millard cornet!

Bill

UPDATE: well, ,it worked, but it had an adverse affect... the existing silver plating turned black. the foil was covered in tarnish, but it didn't "clean" it. good thing i tried it on one slide first.

i did pick up a new bach cornet mpc that fits the bill, but i'll look into your site. a mpc that goes with the period would be more acceptable. thanks!

Re: New Horns

I stand corrected, the foil/baking soda/salt method worked. i just needed to hand polish it afterward. i only tried it with two slides, but here's a perfect "before / after" shot of how well it worked:
