New Horns

I picked up a pair of cornets off ebay, one a LeFevre stamped "Paris 691", the other a Harwood "Solo Model". They are both identical, so I'm assuming the Harwood is a clone of the Lefevre... and that assumption is based solely on the fact that I've heard of LeFevre and not Harwood.

While both horns need some lovin, the LeFevre is in much better shape regarding looks and playability... and is now the favorite of my collection. I love this horn and immediately felt "natural" to me. It's sound is crisp and clean, slots easily, and has excellent range.

Here's the LeFevre:

Can anyone give me a roundabout year on either of these horns? I can't find anything.

Here is the lefevre page off Horn-u-copia.
Cornets

I would say the cornets are at least 100 yrs old, but not certain of exact age.

thanks! yeah, based on the only pictures i've seen of LeFevres online I'm putting them between the 1890's and 1900's. now i have to compare them to the LeFevres in my brass band, of which we know the years...

and blast you for making me join another horn forum! i had to register with horn-u-copia to see that page... oh well, just another distraction to keep me sane at work!

Ha, sorry about that. HUC is a great resource, especially now that you are getting more into the vintage horn scene. At least they will send an automated 'Happy Birthday", as they did to me today, also Trumpet master chipped in with exactly the same script. I am always in favor of bolstering the mental health of trumpet players.

i'm definitely going to have to browse HUC tonight. i don't know what it is about the vintage horns, i suppose it has a lot to do with me being a history buff. i'm not really attracted to the modern, expensive beauties... take that in whatever context you see fit ; )

after playing that LeFevre on a modern mouthpiece (my chops were shot after a half hour of playing on the antique mpc it came with) i doubt i'll by anything other than an antique or vintage horn again.

and happy birthday!

Re: New Horns

Thanks, Ed. I appreciate it. Many sites you register with will send robotic wishes. I have an ancient cookie cutter mp that OLDLOU gave me to try on an old Concertone cornet I don't have anymore. I have tried it lately on my current ones, but it is tiring and doesn't play the same as the new ones as far as volume or tone quality. I would just like to find a more modern Deep V cup for the cornets and not pay much. It might happen! I am a history buff also so have a natural affinity for relic's and have owned a few!
Good luck with your new interests. I have just won a couple of vintage trumpets to mess around with.

Re: New Horns

I liked the way the "cookie cutter" (i like that description) played, i just couldn't tolerate it for long.

On saturday i was forced to head over to sam ash in an attempt to find a suitable mouthpiece, all i have are trumpet mpc's. I compared a few bach cornet mpc's, and the closest i could find comparing cups was a 3D... i tested it in their practice room and i really liked that mouthpiece with the LeFevre.

when i got home and was finally able to put the combination through the ringer everything just "clicked". in fact last night i played for about three hours straight just for the fun of it and fell in love with the combination.

Happy Birthday, Dave. If you keep this up, you'll catch up with me someday (I quit having them - it was too stressful).

Ed: That's a beautiful 'lil cornet you've got there. Glad it's working out for you.
