New lead horn from Eclipse UK

This thing is in another league. Leigh brought it with him onhis visit to Germany for me to play test, and now I want one.
Very crisp, brigh ENORMOUS volume of sound, immediate attacks, but has character in the staff....
I know this thing is new but I can tell you there is nothing on the market that can hold a candle to this thing for playing lead...

.470" bore
Bell has a nickel-silver shaft and a heavywall .7mm RIMLESS bell made from yellow brass, large throat.

It is a prototype, and still is raw/unfinished....

This looks just like the Chicago Brass Works horn (same valve cluster). All of their horns have a beadless bell just like this one. I think CBW"s have made these for about 3 years. It is a copy of the Conn Vocal bell.

The valve block is the one used on a standard eclipse - Bauerfeind. This bell is made on the Eclipse mandrel... maybe has the same style as another bell...
Basically, it is an Eclipse LY .7mm bell with a nickel silver shaft, no rim.

I do think the CBW horns utilize a similar valve set made by Bauerfeind but they probably aren't exactly the same as the Eclipse as all custom makers change the setup and play of their valves. The .470 bore is also a huge difference as I think Wayne's horns were all .460 bores but I'm not 100% positive on this.

We had the booth right next to Wayne's horns at the ITG conference in Denver so I had a chance to play on a bunch of his horns. They all were extremely well crafted and played very well! It's a shame to see Wayne go to Yamaha, perhaps Yamaha will start making rimless horns in the near future! ;)

The rimless two allow bell is EXTREMELY cool. I can imagine that the feedback provided to the player is amazing. I really want one now too but already have two amazing Eclipse horns. I guess I'll keep saving my pennies. The rimless bell has been around for well over 65 years thanks to those old Conn 40 and 48Bs!

I am wondering if Leigh will make the same horn but with a lighter bell. It seems like in the US a majority of the lead players I work with want thinner material to spark more. It's the whole Calicchio/Conn 60B mentality. I think a heavier bell would be advantageous for sheer volume as it won't break up as much and for projection power. mmmm, like the old Connstellations... heavy but projecting like crazy!

That being said my newly replated (brush silver... absolutely stunning!) MY is a TREMENDOUS lead horn with a great deal of projection and stability.

Congrats again, Leigh! I'm sure this will be a WONDERFUL new addition to the already amazingly versatile Eclipse line!

I was just saying that the Eclipse and the Chicago Brass Works horns use the exact same valve cluster. The new beadless bell has been done before by Conn (vocal bell). This style(beadless bell) has also been used by the Chicago Brass Works horns for about the last 3 years.

This is Leigh's version of the beadless bell horn.

Trent, you gotta play this thing. It has the same sizzle tambre as the med classic, just MORE of it, and it has a much wider blast area but it doesnt really spread..... you have to play it!

I played a large bore Large Yellow a few months ago back in the old workshop in Dunstable, I was really impressed, but it wasn't for me and the type of playing I do. I've also played the Medium Classic, so it should be incredible with that bell if what Gary says about them is true. I knew Leigh was experimenting with bells and flares in different metals and thicknesses, but I've never seen one as 'unusual' as that one. Looks great.

About the similarity with the CBW horns. From what I've seen, there's precious little that's never been tried before in the trumpet world, it's 'just' a question of having the skill, knowledge and persistence to put it all together in a way that works. I'm sure Wayne Tanabe has all that. The guys at Eclipse do too. Actually, I didn't look at it and think 'it looks like a CBW horn, I thought 'it looks just like mine but with a funny bell'.

I am sitting here smiling to myself just imagining the kind of damage Gary has been doing with that beast :) I've had the unforgettable experience of hearing Mr Wilder in the flesh - he should be on the next demo CD for the B.E. method, the most awesome sound I've ever heard coming from a trumpet!!

I knew you would flip out over that horn Gary - but I guess you know its already sold - even though it is still really only a prototype. It was bought by a London based player who specializes in Salsa and latin/jazz ensembles and the brilliant tone, power and scintillating projection which are the essence of the horns character made it love at first sight.

I just wanted to chime in with my opinion - for what its worth - and without dismissing anybody elses, but personally I would not rush to label any horn as a jazz horn, lead horn, classical horn or commercial horn. I wouldn't want anybody to think that the new large bore Eclipse is only for playing lead on - or more importantly that simply playing this horn will turn you into a lead player. I just think that, when this version of the Eclipse is finally launched it will be another fantastic addition to an excellent stable of trumpets - offering players of all styles another great horn to consider.

I have been working closely with Leigh on the development of the large bore for many months - and it has to be said that this particular set up with the new bell is a fantasticly well balanced and viscerally exciting instrument. It is going to be very popular with a wide variety of players. I love playing it and would be happy to take it with me on ANY professional engagement no matter what chair or what style of music. Then again that is true for all the horns that I test in the factory. If it comes down to the very best set up for me then its still going to be the medium yellow which i have been playing for 2 1/2 years now.

BTW Trent, I got the chance to play your horns before they left the factory - love the new finish.

I'd love to hear what some of your colleagues thought about the horn Gary. Glad you had fun and sorry Leigh took it home again.
