| New Student Rental:Bach TR 300 v Yamaha YTR3325 Hi everyone, Greetings! I stumbled upon these wonderful forums for trumpet players by accident and I have enjoyed browsing through the topics. I am a beginner about to start trumpet lessons and I am in need of some advice. I will be renting my trumpet until I feel that I am serious enough to purchase my own. The store has two options for rentals: Bach TR 300 or Yamaha YTR 3325. Which horn should I choose to get the most out of my first few months and why? Thanks in advance for any advice and opinions. |

The differences were small. The Bach slotted a little better on High F's and G's (one octave above the top of the staff). But I doubt that you will be playing those high notes for a long while. Both trumpets felt like they had equal air resistance, while a Holton 602 felt much more open. The Yamaha had a slightly sweeter, more beautiful, more brilliant sound to it, while the Bach sounded somewhat dead (like you would want for a German orchestra?). The valves and slides and all felt equally good on them. I don't know if it is usual, but the Bach came in a cheap plastic case that was also used for Bundy trumpets, while the Yamaha came in a very nice wooden case covered with nice material. The quality of the Bach 300 and the Yamaha 2320 were equally good over-all. The small difference in tonal quality is a matter of preference. Something strange I noticed: One trumpet felt like I was holding it out farther, it felt like I was holding a longer trumpet, although they looked like they were the same when I laid them down on a table together. I don't remember which it was. - morris | |

They have the most consistent quality control of ANY mass produced instruments. My suggestion is to have your teacher choose the better of the two. We cannot diagnose ANYTHING over the internet and you HAVE the opportunity to play before you pay! Go with your teacher to the store and pay attention to what they do during the play testing! The most important lesson that you will ever get is: DO NOT TAKE ANYBODIES WORD FOR IT! It is your money and only you can decide what is best!!!! If you don't know what you are doing, you take an extra pair of eyes and ears that you can trust with you. |

| Re: New Student Rental:Bach TR 300 v Yamaha YTR3325 Thanks for everyone's kind feedback! I ended up getting the Bach TR 300 from the rental place. They ran out of the Yamaha model so the choice ended up being easy. It was surprisingly difficult to make sounds from the embouchure as compared to playing the clarinet and the saxophone. I can only manage to play a G( all valves open) and the C above that. I guess I'm going to need alot of practice buzzing out of the mouthpiece before being able to play more notes. I hope I can at least play an octave in the next week or two. |
