Re: new valve springs?

Im no expert, but I would very thoroughly clean your instrument and if that doesnt help, change your oil, try a few oils that others with similar problems have found helpful.

The instrument is a machine and every part including the oil has a part in its function so changing the oil might help, and its by far the cheapest option.

Every time you change the oil its best to clean the instrument as carefully as you can, some oils can react with pre existing residues of old oil and produce a residue that some say can make your valves stick.

good luck

Brian

Re: new valve springs?

Welcome to TM, homygg!
A few years ago I had an incident with my marching horn where I dropped a valve piston and it just would not go back into the casing. I sent it in, and it goes it but still it occasionally sticks to the casing no matter what sort of oil/lube I use with it.

I found that replacing the springs caused the valve to move up and down faster, but to this day I still get that friction in that particular valve.

Now, perhaps you don't have quite the hardware problem that I did-- if you aren't using the same type of valve oil as the previous owner, giver your valve pistons and the inside of the casings a very good wipedown. In addition, it may be a good idea to have an old horn that is new to you professionally cleaned. It will put you down $30-70USD depending on where you have it done, but it's definably worth the money.

I had a similar problem with my Bach Strad. Drove me nuts. My friend had me talked into Al Cass valve oil. My valves were very sticky. Then he took my springs out of the valves and stiffened them. My valves still stuck constantly. I switched to Blue Juice and have never looked Bach. Don't do anything DRASTIC until you have tried different oils. I am now in the market for original valve springs because mine are too stiff. LEARN from my mistake.

Well if the new oil doesnt help, a new alignment might help

Re: new valve springs?

Hey guys, if the horn is 20 years old and has original or old springs replace the springs it only costs about $10.00. But first things first ..... WASH IT !!!!!!!!!

Re: new valve springs?

For alternate oils try H2Oil from BrassSpa or Berp BioOil. Those are great for me and my old horns that "Had" sticky valves. Personally like the Berp BioOil only a tad better so it is what I chose.

Springs are cheap though may not be a cure. Seen some really old horns compared to yours on original springs.
