| Mezzo Forte User | Oh boy, here we go... Ok...I think I'm gonna do it...I'm gonna...gulp...retire the Studio... What's worse, I intend to replace it with a newer horn. Provided my car doesn't go belly up like it did the last time I thought about this, the funds will be available. However, I hate looking for new horns, and I can't stand actually plunking down the cash for them, either. I'm always afraid that I'll love the horn the day I buy it, then hate it the rest of the time. Anyway, I need a pretty versatile horn. It needs to do my symphonic band as a first priority, and possibly some jazz stuff as a second priority (not necessarily lead). Here's what we're looking at thus far: Schilke S22 S32 B1 B3 X3 Kanstul ZKT1600 ZKT1504 ZKT1503 CHI1001 Yamaha 8335LA 8345RGS 6345GS Stage One Vintage Bach Strad, if I can find one for the money that plays well And for the "Not a snowball's chance in heck, but still would be nice" category Wild Thing Stage One Cali or Classic Eclipse and the Obligatory Monette See why I hate this? I have roughly 15 trumpets that I'm thinking about seriously. This poses a dramatic problem, as I'd like to try as many as possible. However, the only decent trumpet store I can think of anywhere near here is Brass With Class down in Houston, and that's just Stage One. Horn Haven in Dallas might have some of the Kanstuls (if they're still in business). No telling where I'll find a Schilke at. Any suggestions? Oh, and if you have any experience with these horns, feel free to comment on them.

![]() | Re: Oh boy, here we go... Not a journey for the faint-hearted! A few years ago I compared an 8345RGS head to head with a Wild Thing. I don't remember enough to give a detailed review but what sticks in my memory is that the Yamaha sounded thin in comparison with the WT. I've been on a similar trek and I hope I'm near the end. : ) Take whatever advice you get with a grain of salt because there is a huge subjective component to it, even from the experts! Also, a comment from the gentleman who runs the Schilke Loyalist site (I forget his name) comes to mind. I'm paraphrasing here: Whatever horn you play, you will always sound like you (and Wynton will sound like Wynton, and Wayne will sound like Wayne....) I'm planning to follow my son's sage advice in the very near future: "Get a horn you like, learn how to play it, and keep it." | New Friend | Re: Oh boy, here we go... im looking for a horn as well.....ive been on ebay and found this on their.....just wondering if its a reliable horn....if you guys know because i've never heard of it. this is the description: Superb Brand New SILVER Pro Series Trumpet from Largo Australia Monel Pistons and Cupronickel Tuning pipe Gold Brass Bell ! Key of Bb This superb new trumpet comes to you from Requiumusic, with over 20 years experience in the music industry. It is important that you purchase your new trumpet from someone who specialises in musical instruments, and not someone operating as a warehouse, simply packing off any instrument, with no real knowledge of how an instrument works and plays. Both the owners of Requiumusic are classically trained in music. Professional Quality This very high quality Trumpet, in the key of B flat, and is made on the Bach series 200 model, and is of a very high quality. Has superb sound quality and clarity, and intonation. Here are a few things you might want to know This superb Trumpet, from Largo Australia, comes from our factory's pro line range, and is an actual reproduction of the famous Bach series 200 model. Most student horns, are simply entry level student instruments, and have very little character or range. In contrast, the Largo Horn, is rich in character, tone and ability. This Trumpet, acts and sounds like a studio level instrument. This means most importantly, that it plays in tune, which is rather critical when you are trying to play along side other instruments. Plus it is mechanically smooth and precise. With all this in mind, A Great deal of effort has been taken by the manufacturer of this fine Trumpet, to produce an instrument that is both affordable, and musically satisfying to play. Intonation and functionality of use, ( comfortability and ease to play ), have been most important in the development of this fine horn. The manufacturer of these fine instruments, has been hand making horns for over 30 years. RRP $699 Monel Pistons The use of monel valves and pistons is a standard feature of all Largo trumpets, and insures you will get many years of smooth playing. As valves are the heart of the trumpet, we have decided to go with the best and insist on Monel valves. What are Monel valves ? Monel valves are made from white copper-nickel alloy, which is much harder then the normal stainless steel pistons found in cheaper trumpets, and it is also acid and corrosive resistant, meaning your valves will last ! These valves are precision ground and hand lapped for silent action. Cupronickel Tuning Pipe Why have a cupronickel tuning pipe ? Cupronickel, is an alloy, 75% copper, and 25% nickel. This is a much harder metal, and will resist dents, so your trumpet will stay in tune, improves the tone, and resist tarnishing. Features Trumpet Silver Plated Monel Pistons Cupronickel Tuning Pipe 7C silver plated mouthpiece Cleaning cloth Lubricating oil Gold Brass Bell Bell diameter 125mm Bore size 11.66 mm Hard case with plush interior Two water keys Ist Valve thumb Hook All This adds up to a high quality Trumpet, that will not only last the distance, but it also plays with a solid tone and has accurate intonation. The high quality Silver Plate finish gives the horn a nice bright warm tone, and is very robust with excellent sound projection

| Pianissimo User | Re: Oh boy, here we go... Bigdigit5...I dont know that i would risk my money on that trumpet. It does not look like a quality horn. Unless someone says they have played one and it is ok, or you get to play one yourself, I would not. To Bigagg... I really like kanstuls. They are great. I played the yamaha La and i would not recomend it for symphonic band. it is very tight. The rgs or gs though are very nice and would be versitile. I know quite few people that use those horns for many situations and it was probly my favorite yamaha(besides the artist models). All the horns you listed are good horns. I dont know if you have done this, but most of those trumpet makers have a dealer page so you can see where the closest store is. But like Dave Taylor said, just find whatever YOU like. They are all perfectly good horns but its about you. |

![]() | Re: Oh boy, here we go... Hello Michael (bigaggietrumpet), Yes, you do have quite a challenge facing you, as you have described some wonderful instruments! Of course, I operate the "Brass with Class" you mentioned in your post. I am, however, about 2-4 weeks away from opening a brick and mortar storefront (a long time dream...but that is another story)! The facility will be called "Cinco Ranch Conservatory of Music LLC" And yes, concerning instruments, trumpets will be our forte! I will soon have a Stage 1 Vintage in my possession, which you are most welcome to try. Hopefully in the not too distant future, a California Light as well! I will also carry the Fides line, and if you have not tried them, they are truly great instruments at a great price! I may also carry a couple of the Getzen custom line, and an upper end Weril product or two. Anyway, when you get ready to try out product, do please consider contacting me!! It would be a pleasure to help you find your next primary trumpet...and anyone else living in Texas! Blessings,

![]() | Re: Oh boy, here we go... As far as I can see you have 3 broad categories in your 'universe'. Schilke, Bach (clones) and the Chicago 1001 (which is a Benge). Start narrowing your search down by finding out which type you play and sound best on then go from there. In my opinion those 3 general types play quite differently. Regards, Trevor |
