Phaeton Trumpet

I am looking to buy a Phaeton 2030 Bb trumpet and have heard about his horn having a bright sound, is this true, or would it be easy to get a dark sound out of it?

Re: Phaeton Trumpet

I have had my phaeton for almost two years now.
After a 9 month break in the valves are like hot butter!
Now as far as my tone on it (with a size 11 mp) play's like dark chocolate.
However with my stage 1 mp it,s very bright.

But you know what they say, you gotta try it out.
Now my new stage 1 XH Bb................that's crispier then a bucket of chicking!
And it;s finger poping good too.

Re: Phaeton Trumpet

Jarvs,
who said it had a bright sound? Someone whose ears that you can trust? Someone that really owned the horn? Or just somebody on the internet who felt an urge to write something he thought someone else would read?

Most quality horns bring various traits with them that cannot be simply labeled bright/dark, big/small. What sounds brilliant in a big hall could sound bright in a practice cell. What sounds dark in that same cell could sound stuffy in a big hall. A horn that projects really well could sound rough up close. The mouthpiece used, what horn the player normally uses all affect the results.
What I am trying to say is that you only need to pay attention to "qualified" comments. They generally will include more than just "bright".
The Phaeton is a quality horn that like others in its class, can have many personalities. Find one to play and let us know what YOU think!

Re: Phaeton Trumpet

I just went out and tried the Phaeton 2030, and wow. I got a very rich dark sound in the hall that I played in, I used my Monette B6 mouthpiece. The horn facilitated an easier upper register, I got a 3rd on my range. I also really enjoyed the feel of the horn. I am actually going to pick one up this saturday. The one I found was a Brushed antique brass.

Re: Phaeton Trumpet

I picked up a Phaeton a few months back. It was the antique brushed brass model. I think I would describe the sounds I get as "versatile". True, if I push it, the sound gets brighter and, in that regard, I can play it as a lead horn. If I back off a bit, it starts sounding a bit more mellow and I can blend with most sections. As someone else mentioned, the choice of mouthpiece undoubtedly plays a part in this too. I'm currently using an EM1, which suits me pretty well. I am completely satisfied with the Phaeton and have made it my "workhorse" horn. Thanks-Ken B.

Re: Phaeton Trumpet

Clarence,
Sounds like you are really enjoying your horn. I think a big strong congratulations is in order and I'll look into playing one of the horns at Trumpet guild. Thankyou for posting your joy. I like your writing too.

Jim
