Picc comparisons Hi guys, I'm currently looking for piston picc for all round use. I'm tossing up between 3 brands at the moment - Schagerl, Thein and Blackburn. I'm in Australia so I don't have the opportunity to try many horns so I'm Just wondering if anyone out there has played all 3 or even 2 of these horns and what your thoughts are regarding comparison. Any responses are greatly appreciated. Cheers guys, Simon

Re: Picc comparisons I've 3 varieties of Blackburn, and 2 varieties of Thein, and both are very hard to beat. At that point I would say you really just need to choose whatever horn you like the tone of the best. I love the Thein Bb/A/G pic and the Blackburn Bb/C and A/G models. Oh to have all of the horns that I want....

Re: Picc comparisons Wow! You're just the person I'm looking for! What are the differences between the 2? I'm looking at the Bb/A/G Thein and the Bb/C Blackburn. I can't get a trial on a Blackburn but I have a trial Schagerl on the way and I'm going to try to get Max to send a Thein out here too. Cheers, Simon

Re: Picc comparisons Well, FOR ME, the Thein (the model that Hofs plays) was more freeblowing in all regards and had more of a "big horn" sound, whereas the Blackburn long model Bb/A gave me the feeling that I "had something to push against", which isn't necessarily a bad thing. You also need to take into consideration what pitch you want the piccolo to be at, based on what type of literature you intend to play on it (though you can't get much more versatile than the Thein Bb/A/G), as this could be a limiting factor in your decision. At this point you are deciding between a Bentley and Rolls Royce.

Re: Picc comparisons Just glad that I could help. Please let us know how it works out! I know I'll be curious to get someone else's opinion on the matter. You could also PM trumpetmike as he is something of a piccolo guru.

Re: Picc comparisons Simon, where in Australia are you? I have a Stage 1 picc that you might like to try if you're in Perth anytime. Last edited by tptshark : 07-06-2007 at 01:09 AM. Reason: spelling :-/

| Mezzo Forte User | Re: Picc comparisons I never tried the other two, but the Schagerl Eclipse is quite good indeed. The sound is really nice, easy to play, very good intonation. Actually, before deciding for my Spada. I was hesitating between the rotary scherzer, schagerl and spada. IMO schagerl and spada are quite similar playing wise. This may be helpful...
