piccolo trumpet

I am thinking about getting a piccolo trumpet soon in the next year or so but I have heard that you should wait for a certain age like freshmen in college. So I was wondering is thier any skills that you really need to work on to play it profficiently, or a certain age to build up embrocher ability and what trumpet would be good to get.

Re: piccolo trumpet

I am a sophomore in college and have not yet had a need to have or play a picc. It all depends on your level as a player. I would suggest that you wait on buying a picc until you are in college and talk with your professor about it. If you plan on being a jazz player for the rest of your life you may not ever have the need for a picc. I really think you should just focus on your Bb trumpet and maybe a C trumpet, if you already have one. Save the money from buying horns right now and use it to get lessons, or other supplies for when you start college. How old are you right now and how long have you been playing?

Re: piccolo trumpet

some of them do. It helps with intonation and gives you a wider array of alternate fingering, but not all of them have this.

Re: piccolo trumpet

You need the fourth valvce to play the bottom concert D in baroque parts.
For this reason I would not advise getting a three valve piccolo trumpet.

There was a documentary on the TV here about a young choir conductor doing the Magnificat with his school orchestra. I was dreading the trumpet sound but the two young guys (probably about 16 years old) got out their piccolo trumpets and made a very good job of it.

Re: piccolo trumpet

My picc has three valves and I have an extension for the 3rd slide to give me low Eb and D. That covers Bach 100%.
In brass quintet there are a couple of pieces where a 4th valve would make my life easier.
