Hi,

Sadly, the handwriting is on the wall . . . in huge red letters:

CHEAP CHINA LABOR MEANS THEY'LL SOON BE MAKING MOST OF THE WORLD'S MASS MARKET STEP-UP TRUMPETS

This won't affect the small custom makers who are responsive to each and every client . . . but it means the deathknell of companies like Selmer/Bach as far as them dominating the mass market for step up trumpets anymore.

Steinway/Selmer/Bach may not like it, since Bach is the most profitable segment of their company by far . . . but Bach may one day return to being a relatively small company, sold off to a few dedicated craftsmen currently working in the Bach factory.

Wouldn't it be ironic if Bach once again welcomed . . . and once again did custom horns for discerning clients . . . and at the highest standards possible? That may be the only market left for 'em after China takes over the huge high schooler market.

Yep... lot of union/anti-union rhetoric in that thread but the bottom line seems to be "cut costs or get outsourced". Well, it's come to almost every other manufacturing industry in North America; textiles, appliances, toys and games, computers and components. Heck, the Chinese were even exhibiting a car "Made in China" at the auto shows this year. (and you can bet it'll last longer than a Lada!)

Glad I've got my Schilke, Eclipse and Getzen tucked away nice and safe! Now if only I could afford a new flugel.

I'm not rejoicing after hearing these labor troubles. WE all know Bach had consistency problems for a long time. Finally over the past few years they have been turning out some good horns. And now they are coming out with their version of the "Chicago" C trumpet. If those horns come out inconsistent, all that R&D money spent is in the toilet.

Mr. Steinway, kiss my

Looks like we're headed for the day where the big American musical instrument companies will simply be importers and marketers who stamp their name and distribute product to their network. The answer is pretty complex but it's not that American workers are making too much.....it's that American business and workers get taxed into oblivion. Our government is great at creating small business.....unfortunately those small businesses are GM, IBM, UAL, Ford.......

Am I the only person who finds the date of this supposed strike, to make the whole thing questionable?

Surely this is a hoax.

I would be surprised if Bach had anything to do with a rumor like that.

That being said, I don't think it is true. If the Bach people made more than the auto workers that would be something. If the company is as successful as they say in that post they wouldn't be cutting that much. The idea is to pay as little as possible without getting the employees mad.

The whole thing is wacky!!
