Quick Question about Bore sizes...

I have a .462 bore trumpet and a .438 or so bore trumpet. I can obviously tell the different tones in the high and low register but I never can figure out about the range. No I'm not looking for a short cut to range, I'm happy with that for now as a high school lead player But which bore is eaiser for range? Like, not to extend it, but to lock in to notes easier?

I've heard stuff about how smaller bores will just "close the door" on high notes because of resistance. So if anything that would be good for a longer gig not in the complete high range...right? But i've heard the bigger bore will lock in easier and feel "free" in the upper register. As in easier to lock in and move between notes because of the free blowing option. But, if i'm playind loud or high or both, I'm done in like..what? Half an hour unless I practice for a very very long time? I've heard other wise for each as well.

So anybody know? Or is this really just a personal preferance for tone issues?

Re: Quick Question about Bore sizes...

In general, the smaller bore gives a darker sound. German rotary trumpets have a smaller bore, yet still play as high as you want/can.

Practicing for a long time helps. Try about 9 months at 6 hours a day and the bore sizes will become moot.

Have fun!

It is really what you feel plays more efficiently for you. However, what Vulgano said is true.

I really get BORED of players looking for a hardware solution to a software problem.

IT IS YOUR CHOPS, EARS AND BRAIN NOT THE BRASS OR OIL.

NEVER forget that.

Re: Quick Question about Bore sizes...

that is weird because i have always heard that a larger bore makes you sound darker, but i am sure that you guys would know sooner than i would, so thanks for correcting me. i just recently (about 8 months now actually) went from a .459 to a .464 bore size and love it. it feels much more open and easier for range, my tone is also darker, but that may also be due to the added weight since i now use a getzen genesis which weighs a lot more than my old yamaha.

Re: Quick Question about Bore sizes...

No I know it's all the chops etc. Just the bore makes a difference too. Big is more free in the upper range from what I know. Easier to lock in in a way, for me at least. Just you better have a lot of air to push through or else you won't be to loud. Them small bore, for me, I can play about the same, just I can't project as much but I can play for a logn time =D
