Raw Brass Monettes

Hello everyone, I just discovered this forum and I must say it is a wonderful place. I have been playing the trumpet for a little over thirteen years as an amateur and I currently play a lacquer Bach Strad B-flat model 72 as my primary horn with a standard Monette B2 mouthpiece. I have been considering purchasing a new horn and am about 95% sure I am going with a Monette. With my head already spinning at the price I now find myself having a hard time choosing between the "Classic" model and the "Prana". I also am finding it hard to justify the cost for plating as it is very expensive IMO. Does anyone here own a raw brass Monette, and if so do you regret not getting it plated? Also if you own a raw brass monette could you please post a pic or two? Thanks so much and I look forward to your replies.

To answer your question, in a round-about fashion ....

Given the choice of raw brass or gold-plate, I suggest beginning with a raw-brass horn. Upon using it for a period of time, you may require modification(s) or repair or adjustment(s).

Once you have "settled-in" with the horn, you may either have grown fond of the raw-brass appearance, or, you may elect to have it plated ... (also, gives you time to recover from the initial cost).

Going in the opposite direction (gold-plated to raw-brass) would be egregiously foolish.

Welcome to TM

I have raw brass and plated Monettes. I haven't found any difference in the horns. The only thing is that one looks new all the time and the other looks old.

My B flat is a plated 993 regular Monette and my C is a Prana One raw brass. Its hard to know the difference because they are in different keys. They both play so well.

Something else to consider is that we both are armature players, so while I can't tell the exact difference maybe a better player like Manny can. I would have to play both trumpets side by side in the same key to see if I could pick up on the difference.

If I were you I would go to the shop and play for them. It will be a small investment compared to the price of the trumpet and it will be the best trumpet lesson you ever had.
