Returning player

First off I've browsed here for a bit and decided to register. I've dusted off my old horn after a 12 yr break

I've still got my old silver Bach TR200. Its had some repairs and my acidic skin had eaten off the finish around the valves long ago.

I cleaned it up and still have my tone. I still remember the fingerings but the chops just aren't the same.

My young boys are showing some interest. I've been shopping ebay hoping for a deal on something used/vintage under $100 that was a starter/intermediate horn they could learn on and worst case I could use some too.

Any suggestions or is this a hopeless cause?

Ideally I'd find an old Mount Vernon strad at a garage sale for $50 and give em mine :)

I'm in the DFW area and a former student of Woody Yenne if anyone knows him.

Here's a '55 Mt. Vernon I bought at a junk auction for $60.
You never know what you'll find if you keep your eyes open.

That Conn trumpet looks fine for a beginner if it goes cheap enough, although the finish is suspect. If it's not lacquered (looks like it could be raw brushed brass), I'd pass on it.

Thanks. What's with a brushed brass finish? I don't recall seeing one that way before.

It looks like there are a few of the olds ambasadors its just finding the right one for the right price.

It's a cheap way of making a beat-up, scratched-up, or worn lacquered horn look better. Either the lacquer is lightly sanded or roughened with steel wool, or the lacquer is removed and the brass is roughened the same way. This type of finish (or sandblasted finish) is available on some new horns, too. Many horns from the 20's and 30's had a satin silver finish with polished accents. This is a modern variation of that style. Nothing wrong with a lacquered-brass "scratch" finish if you like the look, but I wouldn't buy my child an unlacquered brass horn. I just re-read the eBay description, and this horn is raw (unlacquered) brass. Keep looking.

An Olds Ambassador is probably a better horn than a Conn Director. An Ambassador cornet is a better horn than the Ambassador trumpet. Just my opinions, of course. If you look at Ambassador cornets, get one without the circular right-hand pinky ring. Although these are the older ones that some say are better, the ones with the standard pinky ring (the newer ones) will likely be in better condition AND will use a standard cornet mouthpiece. The older cornets won't - the receiver is larger. Doesn't matter on the trumpets, though.

Olds cornets

I just stopped at a yard sale last Friday, because I saw a trumpet or cornet on the first table in the driveway. i couldn't tell what it was for sure from all of the way out in the street. What I found was a Los Angeles made Olds Special cornet in a totally trashed out case. The little horn was missing one of it's valve bottom caps and the cork was gone from the spit valve. In all other ways it was in almost mint condition. After asking the price and reminding the lady who had the horn for sale that the case could only be used to fill my trash bin and that the horn needed some parts and labor she agreed to a sale price of TEN U.S.DOLLARS ! I just happened to have a matched set of bottom valve caps for an old Ambassador in one of my junk drawers and the cork was a 30 second job. Now, I have to find an Olds cornet case in decent condition. My 'new' cornet cost me a total of $10.00, but, is worth a great deal more. By the way, it plays superlatively and the valves show almost zero wear. Sometimes even a blind old squirrel will find a nut.

Craigs List cornet

If you don't buy that Reynolds, I will. If it is nickel or silver plated it is worth even much more. I can't tell from the photos what the finish is. Let me know if you have purchased it. I don't intend to snipe you out of it.

Pretty nice-looking horn from the pics. Looks go a long way in encouraging a beginner. The medalist was the low-end Reynolds student model, but it's still a good beginner horn - and the price is OK, too. The bonus is that you can see the horn before you buy it.
