RS Berkeley trumpets

Has anyone ever heard of or know anything about this company and its line of instruments. I just had the occasion to read the post entitled Uses for a Chinese Trumpet and noticed that the trumpet the author was referring to was called a "Harmony." I also noticed that this company has a series called Harmony as well. I'm looking for a pocket trumpet for my 12 year old son who is in his first year of band at his middle school. He's playing a King model 600 student trumpet which I feel is fine for him to learn on. But he's actually progressing at an accelerated rate so I was eventually going to upgrade if he chose to stick with it next year. However, he has been asking for a pocket trumpet for Christmas and I found a site that sells Jupiter pocket trumpets for just over $500 but ran across these RS Berkeley pocket trumpets for just over $300. The company actually does have a website (RS Berkeley Inc Musical Instrument Co., manufacturer of musical instruments) but I didn't want to purchase one of these instruments if it was going to have problems or fall apart on me. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,
ASC1969

Not to be short but the old saying goes "you get what you pay for" . I don't know if I would be looking to spend a fortune on a pocket trumpet but if you want it to last I would look into something different

Re: RS Berkeley trumpets

You ALWAYS need to play before you pay.
There are many pocket instruments being sold for und $200 and there is nothing to stop some gouger from charging a couple of hundred bucks more in hopes that the buyers will reason that it can't possibly be the cheap horn.......
You ALWAYS need to play before you pay.
There is NO shortcut!

Re: RS Berkeley trumpets

I actually have a Berkley Cornet, and I'd say the only problem I have with it are the valve springs, which hardley had any resistance to them. I Pulled off the retainers (which was damn hard on these horns, had to use locking pliers because the edges were so sharp) and stretched the springs a little for a little more resistance. They work fine now, definitely not amazing, but there ok.

Overall, I'd give the horn a 7 out of 10 for an intermediate horn.
