![]() | Scherzer Piccs, Lacquer or Sterling I have been checking through all the piccs i can get access of for the last few weeks, and decided to purchase a Scherzer... now, one last question before i place my order is, should i get it in Lacquer finish or Sterling finish?? I have tried the Lacquer one and it sounds great, but my teacher told me that, for his preference, Scherzer 8111(Lacquer) is perfect for orchestral setting, but maybe not ideal for some solo pieces, he also told me that the sound of sterling horn (Scherzer 8111 ST) tends to be brighter. Now, i need some suggestions from you all.... Scherzer 8111 or 8111ST? I'll use this Picc mostly for solo pieces, since i'm currently not joining any orchestra and preparing for competitions.... Thank you, your advice is greatly appreciated~~~~~ |

![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Scherzer Piccs, Lacquer or Sterling The idea behind the Sterling Silver bell and leadpipe is that the sound won't change color and "break up" when pushed to high volumes, so as to maintain a mf sound at fff. I can push my Scherzer past the pain threshold and it sounds fff, but still not "tinny" like I do on a p5-4. The lacquer itself is pretty sucky on older models like mine, and any solder work will discolor a huge portion of the lacquer, so mine now falls into the ugly horn class, but it still plays pretty.

![]() | Re: Scherzer Piccs, Lacquer or Sterling i have tried both at shows, and prefered the lacquer for my playing the stearling sounded dull. i play on a Yamaha right now, if i needed to buy an new one i would look at either a scherzer or schilke.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Scherzer Piccs, Lacquer or Sterling I think that many piccolo sounds are too "bright". A slightly warmer sound never hurts and honestly, how often can we get away with FFF on the picc? That would be the last of my concerns. The easy PPP would be more important

![]() | Re: Scherzer Piccs, Lacquer or Sterling Two things get mixed up here: Scherzer offers two bell options: Yellow Brass and Sterling Silver and two kinds of finish: Silver plated or laquered. So the 4 different possibilities are: 1 - Yellow Brass Bell, silver plated 2 - Yellow Brass Bell, laquered 3 - Sterling Silver Bell, silver plated 4 - Sterling Silver Bell, laquered |

![]() | Re: Scherzer Piccs, Lacquer or Sterling Hey...Leicalsf just take the laquered version and become a "singing" piccolo-player ..it's a great horn for solo AND orchestral repertoire at all. I prefere the basic mod. 8111 for Bach cantatas, baroque concerti and even for modern parts such as Strawinsky...Zimmermann...Davies... This Scherzer picc. has a very "organic" sound , pretty good response and perfect intonation in b flat AND a tuning...... I never missed a sterling silver bell at any of my horns.... Have a good time !!! |
