Schilke B1 vs S32

Hello everybody,

Recently I bought a Schilke B1. I love the trumpet and the incredible intonation but the sound seem a little bit too bright for my taste. In a other side, I just love the feeling of blowing in this trumpet. It's just so easy to control anything and blow in a B1! Maybe the trumpet sound great in front of the bell, but to my ear, the trumpet seem to lack of "thickness" in the sound.

I want to know if anybody can tell me the real difference in sound between the B1 and the S32, and if anybody already played the S32 to tell me if I will do a good move to change my trumpet since I can return it.

By the way, I play lead in a big band, but I also do brass quintet, jazz combo and classical music and I don't have the $$$ to buy a trumpet for each job. I want a trumpet who will do it all, and I don't want to buy a Bach.....

Thank you very much.

Re: Schilke B1 vs S32

If you like it I'd stick with the B1. I had a S32 and ended up rather dissatisfied with it. I even ordered it new and in gold plate, thinking this would be the horn of my dreams (having tried a silver S32). A rather personal thing of course, not like it wasn't well put together, build-wise it was typical excellent Shilke quality. To me the S32 just didn't cut it-- did nothing particularly well. If I had it to do over I would have gotten the B5. If you want to try something to really give the B1 a run for the money try a Bach 72* (lightweight bell) with the 43 leadpipe... (no kidding!).

Re: Schilke B1 vs S32

I tested the B1 and the S32 together a couple of years ago. I have the review on my website if you can read dutch or german...

Anyway, the B1 was the favorite of mine. The S32 was tighter and didn't have a bigger sound to my ears. I would not return the B1 if I where you.

Maybe the new Yamaha 8310Z or 8335LA is an option for you because they both have a L bell like the B1.

In case you are not aware, Erik Veldkamp is a VERY accomplished lead player. His website is a great resource for all sorts of things! Definitely a recommended read!

Re: Schilke B1 vs S32

I owned a S32 for several years and it was a good all around horn but for me it had just a tad to much resistance and flat wore me out especially in quintet playing. It had a nice sound, intonation was good and it slotted tight, I probably would have been better off with a B 1 and changed the tonal color with mouthpieces [cups and back bore]. Dave
