![]() | Schilke or Stomvi Picc Hi Everybody, Recently and with some help from my parents i have been allowed to purchase a piccolo trumpet. I will be playing in my sister's wedding this fall and want to start learning some baroque repetiore. Anyway, i went to Raybun in Boston and tried out every piccolo trumpet that they had. I have it now narrowed down to two different ones. A used Stomvi in pristene condition with a custom Osmun Leadpipe and a new Schilke P5-4. The Stomvi has a free blow wiht a VERY bright sound. This horn sounds nice but i am really looking for a versitile horn that can change to accomodate different music. The Schilke is also a free blowing horn with a nice upper register with a cornet shank and Bb and A leadpipes. This horn has a darker sound that i can more easily change to go brighter. I am leaning toward the Schilke because of its sound, although i am away it will take some getting used to with the cornet shank and all. I am also aware that many top proffesionals play Schilke and i figure, if its good enough for them, its good enough for me. Just looking for some input to see which you think is better and if i am thinking the right way in wanting the Schilke. -Jacob

![]() | A few short years ago I was in a similar situation. I went to Dillon music in New Jersey and played both horns on various occasions. In addition, I played on my teachers Schilke for a period of time. Ultimately, I decided to go with the Schilke, for me, the instrument was easier to play and the valves are (in my opinion) perfect (for those fast baroque passages). Overall, the horn has been great...no problems and the sound is good. The stomvi was close, but based on reputation and my own decision, Schilke was the best choice for me

![]() | Thanks for your input. Based on your signiture with the list of your horns i seem to have similar taste. I too have the same Bb and C Horns. I did notice that the valve action on the schilke was with slightly less key stroke than the Stomvi which i like. Any other opinions would be helpful... Thanks, Jacob

![]() ![]() ![]() | Schilke or Stomvi Both the Schilke and Stomvi are great horns, but the Stomvi hasn't been around as many years, and no one has a track record what the valves will be like way down the road. The stock Stomvi also uses a cornet shank (it started out as a Schilke clone) and you will want both A and Bb slides for whatever horn you choose. I looked for intonation, sound, response and reliability in my picc. and bought a Scherzer, partly because I work in Germany. It can hurt viola player's ears and rattle windows whiile still sounding noble. Fun stuff!
