![]() | Schilke student trumpet? I am getting old and my memory sometimes plays tricks on me. Back in the early 1970's did Schilke make a student-level trumpet? I distinctly remember having an old Schilke brochure that made no mention of student-level instruments, but for some reason I have vague flashbacks of some mention of a student-level Schilke trumpet being mentioned somewhere back then. Does Schilke make any student-level instruments today? Is Schilke an independent company today, or has it been bought out by some conglomerate? - Morris |

![]() ![]() | Re: Schilke student trumpet? Schilke made horns with Yamaha in the 70s. The M class Schilkes. They were made primarily with Yamaha parts. Had many problems with the valves. They were cheaper and considered intermediate horns. Schilke does not make any student level horns now. The company was bought by Andrew Naumann, a baroque trumpet maker and a member of the design team of the Edwards Division of the Getzen company. The quality is considered to be as good as always. -cw-

![]() | Re: Schilke student trumpet? If I recall correctly, they even had the hexagonal top & bottom caps that Schilkes are known for. I considered buying an extremely used one. I think it was the M-II. I played on it for a few weeks. There was really nothing special about it, so I passed. That was my first experience with Schilke so it was an eye opener when I later tried a B6L. There was such a HUGE difference in quality & playability. The M series (at least the one I tried) didn't do the Schilke name justice. I'm currently on a S42 which I've been playing for 15 years. Garry Last edited by gchun; 05-14-2008 at 02:02 AM. |

![]() | Re: Schilke student trumpet? Of the M series, there was MI and MII - from what I heard, the MII's are a bit better. One of the big differences is that the Ms were put together in an hour, the other Shilkes in a day, so quality control was an issue with the Ms, hence the lesser price. The valve issues have to do with body chemistry affecting the plating, so where some individuals may have a problem, others don't. I have an MII that plays remarkably like a B5 - nwhen I was playing a B6 as my main axe, I used to use it in the dangerous outdoor gigs where I didn't want to take my more expensive horn. You can end up with a good player from an M series - you just have to try a lot of them - not unlike some other manufactuers! I'm about to trade my MII for a Conn Vocabell - it served me well, but I no longer need it, so out it goes. If you can find a good one, it makes a great step up horn, or would be good for someone on a budget who can't afford a Schilke.

![]() | Re: Schilke student trumpet? Had Schilke M that I bought in a pawn shop 25+ years ago. I liked it. Wasn't playing in ensembles. Last horn I owned before hanging it up for a looong time. It suited the purpose well. |
