Raw Silver?

Edit: I rewritten the post. Sorry for confusion.

I acquired a silver bach omega from a friend for use in a marching band - has about 4+ years in it, a couple dings and dents, but for only $100, i thought it was a pretty good deal.

I like the look of 'raw brass', and I was curious if there was an easy (read; non expensive) way to do this for a 'weekend project'.

Here are some examples for what I am talking about:

I think it's called 'brushed' silver.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Sorry, but can you be a little more specific? What is the smudge your are talking about? Spit, turns purple? Finger prints...

Have you tried silver polish or cream on the smudges (whole horn even)?

I have not tried that, I will as soon as I get some, thought it might take awhile to acquire.

I really like the sandblasted-type finish though.

Yea, it would really help to have a silver polish cloth, made by blitz, they are about $8. They work very well and doesn't damage the silver. I own one and works great.

I would expect the blasting needs to be done before silver plating - or perhaps the electroplaters just don't polish the job, anyone know for sure?

I have a 1955 B&H Regent that is in 'frosted' silver and it doesn't show ANY handling marks, it just slowly gets grubby - silver polishing cloths work well on it though.

You can do it with an ultra-fine 3M abrasive pad, there are threads here on how to do it.

The prefer process is to get the surface polished, scratched, blasted, etc. before any plating or lacquer.

However, if you already have a silver finish with decent thickness then you can apply a scratch finish to it using a 3M scouring pad. I did it on my flugel horn and it looks cool.

The down side is that it seems to tarnish faster than a polished silver finish.

Thanks, I remember reading something about this in the super modding trumpet experiment thread, but I wasn't sure how this goes on silver, since it's so thin.

I will look into the abrasive pad.

Edit: Wow, am I blind. Greg, what do you recommend for a 'decent thickness'?
