Sonare trumpets

Hello again all. I was just wondering if any of you have ever played a Sonare trumpet. Now that I won't be able to buy an NYTC horn , I'm looking at the Sonare. If you have played one, does the cryogenic process work? Also, what is the difference between a 900s and an 800s? I know the 900 has a sterling silver mouthpipe, but the 800 has the same without the silver, right? Also, does the difference between the two reason for the price change? If there is a big playing difference, I will want to get the 900, but the 800 is cheaper, so therefore I can buy it sooner. Please help me out everyone. Thanks a lot for your comments in advance.

Re: Sonare trumpets

Hi,
I played a Sonare prototype at a camp, before they were introduced. I remember it being a nice, open horn, smooth through all registers, kinda like my Custom Xeno... I don't know, though, depending on the price of the Sonare, I'd also look at vintage horns(Strads, Benge, Yamaha, etc) You can generally find a beautifully playing horn relatively inexpensive, compared to modern horns.
Good Luck

Re: Sonare trumpets

Hey Jazz9...do a search on TM for Sonare trumpets. Also a great player from Massachusetts by the name of Trent Austin plays one and loves it! You can check some of his clips out where he is using the Sonare and his new Wedge mouthpieces.

Re: Sonare trumpets

Yes, I've been looking into both the trumpet and mouthpiece! Trent's tone is absolutely amazing, and I want the same package of equipment if I can get it! I just can't seem to find a search bar. Can you direct me to it? Sorry for the lack of experience on the site.

Re: Sonare trumpets

Thanks for the kind words, John.

Luckily for me Jim Becker (Osmun wizard and my favorite tech) kept letting me try the horns. Initially I was concerned that they blew too tight and didn't project they way I wanted. This was also due to the fact that I was playing a Monette and honestly everything felt tight to that.

Eventually they came out with the 900 (sterling silver pipe) and when I tried a bunch at the Sonare' factory I was really pleasantly surprised. In fact all of the horns I played were much more centered and more open than before. Jim was saying that the company was continuing to improve their product and I was hooked. I've had maybe 40 bachs in my time and none of them played as well as this horn does. I love the sound, scale, and response. It's just a really (REALLY) good solid all-around horn. The sound really pings and rings in a concert hall, and is GREAT for lead/GB.

I could use this for everything but I love having a few horns around at all times. I do play the Sonare' most of the time (about 75% I'd guess).

I'd ask Jim Becker (who frequents the TH site more than this one) about the pipe difference and price. I really don't know the price but do know that they went up since last year due to the really weak US dollar (these horns are assembled in Germany).

But how can you go wrong with a PVA, cryoed, sterling silver BLACKBURN leadpipe, etc for the $$? Sonare Trumpets at Osmun Music

Re: Sonare trumpets

You really can't, and that's why I'm more excited about this horn than anything else. Thanks Trent, and those are some great clips with that new mouthpiece. :)

Re: Sonare trumpets

I played a couple and they are good horns. The Bb I tried played a little to dark for me and didn't feel as flexible as my Bach 37 that I picked out of about 20 37s. They are built well and seem like a good value. It sounds like they have improved their design since I tried them. Definitely worth a look.

Re: Sonare trumpets

I've tried the Sonare horns (I don't know exactly what model) and to me they feel similar to Blackburn horns. Not surprising since they have the Blackburn leadpipe. The sound and feel isn't quite right for me, but they seem like quality horns for a good price. If they work for you, you've got a winner.

Re: Sonare trumpets

I blew on Sonares at TMEA this year. They felt and sounded very very good. Valves were a little hanging, but I attribute that to the fact that it was a horn at a convention. Very nice horns, IMHO.
