Spada conversion:what is it?

Greetings o wise ones! I just noticed a C trumpet on ebay that was touted as having a Spada conversion. Just exactly what is a Spada conversion and why is it supposed to make a horn better? I understand that it is a European company but that is all I know.

Regards,
Dave Taylor

Re: Spada conversion:what is it?

Spada is a company Based in Switzerland. It is a style of custom trumpets. If you go there, basically you try all parts: bells, tuning slide and leadpipes until you find the combination that works for you. Then they put it together, usually with a tunable bell. They basically do the work that some american custom makers do but in Switzerland. I played one of there C for a long time, it was a Bach bell with a Spada leadpipe and rounded tuning slide, great instrument.

Check it out at SPADA MUSIC AG . You might have to "guess" at a few things (no English) but you'll get the idea.

It seems they take a stock Bach and "tweak it" more than a little bit to produce a custom horn (aside from all of the other stuff they sell or do).

Re: Spada conversion:what is it?

To add the what has been said, Rene Spada (the founder and owner of Spada AG) has started by customising mainly strads but now he is doing his own brand (just plainly and simly spada) to addition to the customising he was doing for years already. Actually, Rene is a trumpeter who studied at the Bern Conservatorium and started to improve his horns an those of his friends...With the time he got better and better till it became a really succesful business. I do not now how good trumpeter he was, but his work as a trumpet maker and repairer is excellent. There is short info on the company in german at SPADA MUSIC AG

Re: Spada conversion:what is it?

Thanks for the info, guys. Spada modifications sound interesting but also a little more involved than I want to get at the present time. I'm not sure I could ever outplay the potential in my current horns.

Regards,
Dave Taylor

Re: Spada conversion:what is it?

The improvement in intonation and response is so great that players of any level can benefit. This is the zenith of a Bach sound concept. Why doesn't Bach implement what Renč has learned? I wish I could answer that question. They would be doing their customers a great service!

Re: Spada conversion:what is it?

Probably Marketing...and mass production. How would the typical customer look on a Strad with a price range above 2000Euros?
