Re: Spray-painting a trumpet???

I take that back. Its red rot. How do you get rid of it? Also, I found some RUST-OLEUM Satin spray paint that I am going to use.

You can't cure red rot. You have to replace the part.

If you do a search on 'red rot' you will find several different threads on this topic. If you look at the definition of red rot, it is possible that it is not over yet. The technical definition of red rot includes any reddish discoloration of the brass while the definition that seems to be commonly used here relates to the more serious condition of dezincification which starts on the inside of the part and then progressively corrodes the metal to the point that you start to see it on the outside. This type will show up as red spots with a dark center which is where the corrosion is about ready to break through.

If what you have is the reddish discoloration on the outer surface only, it can be removed with metal polish. Brasso actually works the best although keep in mind that the mere mention of the name 'Brasso' gives some on this forum heart palpitations. I have used it and have not found it to be as destructive as some claim. But, in your case, it should not matter anyway since you are going to paint over it when you are done.

If what you have is the more serious type, then it is still possible to complete your project. If you thorougly clean the instrument - which you should do if you are going to paint it - and remove the crud and moisture from the inside, it may slow the corrosion down to the point that it will be a long time before it actually breaks through the metal and creates a hole. Some have played for years even after that condition has been detected. It is a rather slow process.

So, since this is a 'lets-see-how-this-works' type of experiment, you really have nothing to lose by just giving it a go. Just do your prep first and it should work out ok. If it were me, I would worry much more about my painting ability - I always seem to wind up with runs in the paint.

Post a photo to let us see what the outcome looks like.

Re: Spray-painting a trumpet???

I sure will!!!
Actually, I may have to replace my lead pipe in the Besson since I have detected a black spot in the middle of the red rot.
This project will HOPEFULLY turn out good.

That's funny that brass-o makes some people flip...I used it on my taylor custom for the entire time I owned that horn and it worked like a charm...granted, it wasn't scratch, just raw brass, but it worked nonetheless.

Re: Spray-painting a trumpet???

To succssfully paint brass you will need to prepare the surface with something like Supalux or Global Metal Etch followed by an epoxy primer and then your choice of finish - otherwise it just sloughs off. An alternative to the etching may be bead blasting but brass is quite soft and bead blasting can be harsh - if you know someone in the aviation industry, blasting with CO2 pellets might be interesting followed by the epoxy primer and finish coat - should look smick if the colour is right.

Smick? I lived in Australia for a couple of years (loved it) and heard all sorts of "Aussie-speak" but that is one I missed. I hope that Smick is a good thing.
