Question Spray-painting a trumpet???

I was wondering if I could spray paint my horn any color because I want to give it some cool colors since it looks like a piece of crap!
Would it be safe? Just the shell of it. Also, would it ruin the tone???
Thanks for the edvice!

Re: Spray-painting a trumpet???

I've seen it done. When I was in high school someone took an old trombone and painted it orange (school color) for pep band. It looked...orange. I don't know if paint adhears to raw brass better than lacquer.

Re: Spray-painting a trumpet???

I have a half sanded half lacquered bundy trumpet with the clear coating gone and with some surface rust. I saw some satin spray paint that I might try out...
Hope it works

Re: Spray-painting a trumpet???

There is no problem laquering a horn. Whether or not normal paint will stick is another issue. Especially at the slides it is easy for oil and grease to get under the paint and allow it to peel off.

I would not DIY spray paint a great playing pro horn. Intermediate on down would give me no heartburn. The sound will not be affected enough that moderately experienced players would notice.

Check this out!

Just a little side note: Brass doesn't rust.

Re: Spray-painting a trumpet???

Like I said, its a bundy student/intermediate horn. I saw some cool looking paint at Lowes and might want to try it out.
Funny story about the green and black trumpet on the web site you gave me, I had a dream about it once and the next day I started drawing it to remember what it looked like.
Thanks for the edvise everyone!

Re: Spray-painting a trumpet???

I painted a beater raw-brass Bb that I used in a funk band (the only playing I was doing on Bb at the time). It was white, and looked cool under the lights, but up close was ugly, and did peel. Make sure the slides and screws are well greased and pushed all the way in, and block the opening to the leadpipe and the holes in the valve-caps. Check google for info about "painting brass"--an etching primer might be required.

It was fun and harmless, although it did sort of look like a plastic sousaphone mutant baby.

Have fun!

Re: Spray-painting a trumpet???

I did it with an old Conn. I now consider it a waste of time and money. It didn't affect the sound however. It's been a while but I remember removing the valves first. I believe that I made sure that the slides were pushed in all the way. You probably want to mask off any area where lacquer can get inside the horn except the bell area.
