Question Stage 1 Trumpets...Help? I'm thinking about getting one.

Okay...So, I'm in the process of searching for a new horn. I had somewhat 'stumbled' upon Stage 1, and I am REALLY liking what I have read and heard so far, especially about Felix being SUCH a great guy to work with.
As it is, I am going to test horns at the TMEA convention, and I'm really starting to lean towards getting a Stage 1, most likely a California-though I love the sleek look of the NY. I'm going to be using it in many situations, like lead jazz, solo, wind ensemble, etc. I am just wondering what all of the options are?! I know there are a lot listed on the site, but from what I've heard, there are a TON more to think about...bell size, metal, leadpipe options, etc...the list goes on. I've already figured out that finish makes a negligable difference, and that comes from respected pros, even a Stage 1 artist himself, and the ITG journal. But there are, I'm sure, tons of other things to think about. I've read some stuff about the tuning slides, and I'm hoping that maybe he will let me get two-an oval one and a square one. But...I'm just trying to figure things out a little before I go to TMEA-that way I don't waste Michael Guevara's whole day! :) (the texas dealer for Stage 1 horns) Anyway...if any of you have any input/feedback about these horns, and what goes into getting one, please let me know! Not to mention..what kind of wait would I be looking at? (Don't get me wrong, I don't care, I want quality, but I'm just curious) Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read all this!

The horns are great! I think all the questions you asked could best be answered by Felix, he is around, I'm sure he'll stop by soon.

Re: Stage 1 Trumpets...Help? I'm thinking about getting one.

I ordered a Stage 1 California as my main horn. Talking to Felix is the best advice, he is one of the best trumpet guys around. I am getting a Stage 1 Cal. with two slides, one round and one squared, with a sterling silver lead pipe and copper bell. The bell will be close to 5" (little bigger than standard). Never had a copper horn so we'll see how it works out.

I also play in a wide variety of genres. From Lead to chamber music, and after consulting with Felix and playing his horns extensivley for about a week it was an easy decision to make. I did a review of his horn in the "horns" forum.

I also liked the looks of the NY Stage 1, and also how it played, but something about the Calif. is special. When I hit the lottery I'll go ahead and get one of each.

IMO Felix's horns are going to make a fast name for themselves as one of the best. Give him a call or an email and I am sure he will help you out.

Re: Stage 1 Trumpets...Help? I'm thinking about getting one.

You know, that's almost the same thing that Nick Drozdoff said about the Cali. I can't wait to try them out...I'm thinking about a copper horn myself...I like the 5" bell idea..I had a Taylor Chicago Custom II, and I loved that huge bell. I'm not sure about all the other options yet, but I'm thinking I might get a brushed copper finish with brushed paladium trim. We'll see though. I like the idea of having both the square and oval slides..and that answers my question on whether you can get both Anyway, thanks for some info. I can't wait to test these out. I'm not sure when I'll get to talk to Felix myself, unless he replies on here, since I'm all the way in Tx. I'll be talking to Michael Guevara at TMEA at least..then maybe he'll put me in touch with Felix. Thanks for the info though! From all these people talking about them, it seems he's on the right track. I have heard NOTHING but positive about his horns.

And there he is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am leaning towards the brushed laq. finish myself. I'd love to do bright gold, but dont have the funds.

Be carefull, when you try them you will like them.

Miles, after just talking to Felix myself..I think I'm going in the same exact direction you're going...brushed laquer, copper bell, sterling leadpipe, 2 slides, one oval, one straight...i can't believe they can do up to a 7" bell with the rimless copper..can you imagine that?! I'd wanna see one of those! :)

Miles, I do have a question-not sure if you can answer, I might have to ask Felix, but about the rimless copper bell...what advantages does the rimless offer? Couldn't the bell be more easily damaged without a rim? Felix, this one's for you-the tuning slides can be nickel silver, bronze, or brass, with or without braces..what differences do the different metals make, and is the difference really significant? Thanks for all the info you gave me before, btw.

Russ
it is actually really easy.
Brass will leave the sound unchanged.
Bronze will make it darker, and Nickel will make it brighter

Thanks Felix! Also, what about the rimless copper bell? What are the advantages and disadvantages? Aren't they less durable? Can you make a copper bell with a rim? Just curious...seems like they might be less durable.
