Stage One California Light Review

Felix, from NYTC, let me take out one his Stage One-California Light models last week for a trial and I would like to post a review for those who may be interested in this type of horn.

When Felix first showed me the horn, I was intrigued by the bracing on the horn. There is hardly any bracing on the horn. This gives the horn a very nice feel......you kind of feel the vibrations from the horn as you play.

This horn has the type of sound that is perfect if you are a commercial player who needs to penetrate bands that typically play very loud....in my case latin bands. The horn has a very compact, bright "laser beam" type sound. It is a very extreme trumpet.

What I love about this horn is that you can get a great quality, commercial sound without working very hard on the job. If you are microphoned correctly it sounds like you a blowing down the house. Also very important is that there is no need to tongue hard on this horn. The lighter you tongue the better this horn speaks. I have played horns in the past that are made for this type of playing, like the Raptor, and they tend to shut down on you if you start to overblow. Not the California.....if you want to play this horn with the same intensity you do your Bach, you can do that and your sound just gets stronger and more brilliant. The response is EXTREMELY quik on this horn. The attacks tend to have a certain pop to them that makes phrasing alot of fun on this horn. Since you can tongue very lightly on this horn and still get a sharp attack, I found I never got tired! Tonguing hard.....that is what kills most of us playing loud commercial music.

The scale on this horn is very even. For those of you who have had a great valve alighnment.......this horn has that type of evenness. This horn is alighned so well that the upper register is accessable without having to make any radical adjustments to your chops.

If you are the type player who comes home all exhausted from your commercial gigs because you are fighting the equipment, then give this horn a try....... and you will just have to worry about making music.

Great job Felix!

Hey Tony G:

Felix is a very loyal guy........I tried slipping your horn into my case at least five times.......Each time he says "Nope, thats for Tony G".

Felix had 4 Califonia light models and they played exactly the same........But yours has some real nice gold triming!

Enjoy!

Stage 1 California Light - Built BY Romeo Adaci

Well, I knew when I opened the box from Felix that the California Light made by Adaci would be something special.... It basically has the same mechanics as my California Standard with less bracing...

From the first few notes it was evident that the sound was much clearer, more focused and tons and I mean tons of projection! I can't imagine a blind fold test with the new light agianst most anything. The intonation is spot on but we all have our personal notes that we have to physically adjust (at least I do). It's just flat out easier to make the necessary adjustments on this horn because it has been set free so to speak!

The sound is a difficult one to describe. It's kinda like a cross between a Calicchio Classic 7 and the California Standard (tough to imagine if you haven't played either) This horn really want's to show off it's brilliance and color while maintaining fluidity! The lower register just speaks with a vigor and the upper register is out of this world... My hit any time money note is high A and this horn seems to want to live there. The sheer volume and projection upsatirs is remarkable yet when I tried backing off around high E the other night at the end of a tune I was able to hold it for a good 16 counts as steady as ever. I had some horn players out the other night who have heard me plenty of times, there they were standing in front of my bell (ball busters) - They noticed a difference immediately.

I did try the first prototype of this horn back in December when it only had 1 brace from the lead pipe to the 2nd valve and one brace from the bell to the 2nd valve.. WE could see it's potential but we all agreed it needed some work! Now there are 2 braces to the lead pipe from the 1st and 3rd valves with the bell brace to the 2nd valve as well making it more stable yet it maintains that vibration in your hands that I fell in love with on the prototype!

I will be play testing a bunch and I mean bunch of tuning slide combinations. Different shapes and alloys and hopefully I can shed some true light to the differences these will make.

The fit and finish along with the valves adjustments Mr. Adaci made are top notch! The slides are wonderful and effortless. You can tell Romeo is passionate and holds a high standard about what leaves his shop, no doubt about it!

I want to thank Mr. Adaci for building this horn and I hope to someday meet you sir! Excellent job!

Felix, what can I say, a little over a year and a half since we met and things are cooking!

Love you Man!

People - Give this one a try before you buy anything!

Actually it is more durable than you think! The prototype w/ 1 brace on each side of the valve block was a bit hairy!

I've yet to use it for pushups!
