Starting the search...

Hey all,

So today was my 18th birthday, and my parents told me that this year they're getting me a flugelhorn. My dad called our local music store and put an order in on a couple of Accent horns for me to try. Anyone have any info on these horns and maybe a few suggestions of some other brands I might try??

Thanks,

PSH

Accent makes some good stuff, and some bad stuff. You really have to try them out. A Getzen Eterna, the Bach 182(?), Yamaha 631 and the Z, Kanstul, etc. The Jupiter is also a good horn, apparently.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

I have played three VintageOnes. All of them reasonably in tune with a dedicated flugel mouthpiece (cornet mp with adapter or cut down trumpet mp did not work!). GORGEOUS SOUND, nice valves, well built. Darker than the Yamaha 6xx and lighter in sound than the Getzen 4 -Valve that I own. Blend in my brass quintet is excellent (the Yamaha and the Getzen too by the way). I have played a couple of Kanstuls, but that was quite a while ago so I don't remember any details! If there were something bad I would have remembered so I am sure they were OK.

Play before you pay and make sure that you get a vee cup flugel mouthpiece with a rim that is comfortable!

Re: Starting the search...

I played a Bach with a copper bell and maybe gold plate. It was at a sale at my local Bach dealer. Then I tried several other brands at ITG conferences. I still like the Bach the best. My use would have been in church.
