Stomvi Master or Schilke P5-4

I have started looking into piccolo trumpets recently. I am far away from being able to get one, but I like to try and do my research first. For now, I am trying to compare the two listed above, Stomvi Master and p5-4(BG preferably). Which of the two would you recommend and why?

I am aware that the Schilke is considered the "standard" but I personally don't see that as a reason to buy a horn (case and point: Bach.) I have tried many searches, both here and on TH and not found too much info on the Stomvi, but what I have found is all good review. Same with the Schilke, except with much better results as far as finding threads about it. I also looked some on Brass Review earlier today and there were all good responses about the Master, and 2 or 3 not so good for the P5-4. But I am sure that it could be the player or they could have possibly just gotten a DOG, as one seemed to think.

Also, if anyone is able to give a review about the sterling and gold plate bells (or even the wooden bell ) for the Stomvi, that would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Stomvi Master or Schilke P5-4

The big argument about the stomvi master series is the break for the screw on type bells that they have... Maurice Andre used the master series with the wooden bell option on many occasion.. but the best part is it comes with 2 bells to pick from....

I don't see what would make that break too huge of a deal, almost all of the french horn players I know use the screw bells, and it doesn't seem to be a bad thing.

I voted for the Schilke, but I'd recommend the new P7-4 model. It comes standard with the BG conversion plus two leadpipes. I've had mine for a year and I can't say enough good things about it - it's the best picc I've played and with the new redesigned leadpipes it outplays any P5-4 I've tried. Stomvi's are good but the Schilke's are even better.

Geez, John - how did you manage to get one? The back-order on those things is ridiculous.

The shilke is a good horn, as you said its "the standard" and there is a reason why its so. And, I think it is a good deal cheaper than the stomvi master, which may or may not be a concern. Try em, and see want you can find out

Re: Stomvi Master or Schilke P5-4

For the Moment my Spada is my favourite. It has a darker sound than the schilke and it is easy blowing...what more would one need. In addition to the standard 3rd slide trigger I got one on the 1st slide which gies me even more cntrol over the intonation. Expensive, but great and useful.

Re: Stomvi Master or Schilke P5-4

Jim - They may have a backorder period, but if you're looking for one you need to find a dealer that has one in stock. When I was tracking down mine I called Schilke and asked them if they had recently sent any out, and sure enough, I called around and one of those dealers still had one in stock. Beats waiting 10 months!

I am pretty sure they are right about the same price range, I could be wrong. But for now I am only in the VERY early stages of researching to see if either one is what I want. Granted, when it comes time to buy one, price will likely be a large deciding factor on which, if either, of these 2 is the one I will buy.

Re: Stomvi Master or Schilke P5-4

The sterling bell on the Stomvi is pretty sweet at higher dynamics, but I would suggest trying the new P7-4--I have heard nothing but good things about it, and Schilkes are a joy to play.

Have fun finding the perfect horn!
