![]() | Strad Mods? So I have a free early 90's Strad Model 37 (a friend gave it to me!). I have it working well now...Valves are very good, slides work etc... It has a wrinkle in the Bell but other than that is in good shape. Is there any reason that this Horn wouldn't make a good basic platform to Mod? There are SO many options out there for Bach mods and many of them aren't very expensive. My Goal for this Horn would be Fat and resonant. Right now it already leans in that direction and I want to enhance it. A Basic Question: The Tuning slide variations out there seem like they mostly affect resistance which of course would affect your Tone, but is there a basic Tonal effect that is consistent? And yes, I am reading the running thread on "How a Trumpet Works". Thanks for that! jmp |

A sound post goes in the front where the brace was and then you add heavy valve caps. I have not had any good experience with heavy caps on any standard Bach Bb or C (gets slottier but worse in tune and the blow becomes more uneven). The tuning bell versions on the other hand seem to benefit greatly! In Europe, René Spada does this best and all of the modded horns that I have played - regardless whether in Bb or C have been fantastic. I really believe that this is the Bach concept taken to its logical extreme. With the tuning bell, you also have the option of changing bells based on what you are playing.

![]() | Re: Strad Mods? That all sounds very interesting. This Horn has some excellent Notes which make me want to work on it but then there are others that sound bad.... almost like there is a leak somewhere (YES I will make sure there isn't) The tone just kind of dies. And Low C# is terrible. "Slottiness" is NOT a characteristic of this horn. On the other hand, it is more Flexible as a result (that is how that works isn't it?) jmp |
