Strange thing...

The other day a gentleman came in with a 50's Conn Connstellation coronet for a cleaning and dent work. As I was taking the dents out of the back turn of the bell, I went to use my magnet to find the dent ball and the magnet stuck to the horn. I then proceeded to try and stick the magnet elsewhere on the horn. To my surprise I could. This to me was quite odd since the entire horn with the exception of bell wire and valve guide retaining screws, was made from non-ferrous metals. After many phone calls to other technicians and craftsman around the world none of which had ever heard of a thing I called Anderson plating, who back in the 50's plated the horn. According to them sometimes nickel can be magnetic, hence the magnet sticking. I then tried this on several other Connstellations from the same period and could not get a magnet to stick.
If any of you have a Connstellation and a magnet laying around I would be curious to see your results.

Josh

Re: Strange thing...

Sounds like they plated with "whatever was laying around" back then. We need to check the health of the owners of that horn. There is a lot of "Wellness" voodoo surrounding magnets. So much that I am surprised that no manufacturer produces magnetic mouthpieces - freer blowing, guaranteed triple C, increase chop strength instantly, blah, blah, blah............

Funny! I thought of that very thing on a long drive to a gig near Chicago 3 or 4 years ago (lots of time for thinking). Make the mouthpiece from ferritic stainless steel and magnitize it. Same advertising hype that you stated, including healing sore chops as you play. Or would they even get sore with the MagniSteel Mouthpiece? Just think of the possibilities!

Re: Strange thing...

You can get mouth pieces made from austinitic stainless steel. One of the Austinitic alloys is slightly magnetic. I think it is T304.

Is a "coronet" the same as a cornet?

Not exactly. When listed on eBay as a coronet, a cornet usually sells for less. Seems that the search for "cornet" listings won't pull up "coronets". When you catch on to this and also search for "coronets", you usually just get a lot of listings for old Dodge cars.

Re: Strange thing...

I would think that this problem would make dent balls very difficult to use.

A cornet is a horn. A coronet is a crown worn by nobels, or a crownlike ornament for the head, as of gold or jewels.
