| Third valve blues........ I have a collection of old beginners/intermediate horns like a 1970s Olds Ambassador for example. It, and a few others have a sticky third valve. I've cleaned everything thoroughly, and looked for burs, and tried different oils. Can anyone tell me why the 3rd valve frequently seems to be the trouble spot when it comes to sticking? |

| Re: Third valve blues........ It might be the way you're pressing it down when you play. I had the same problem with the first valve on any trumpet I tried for the longest time. I realized that I was pulling accross slightly instead of pushing straight down. Have somebody watch you while you play, it's harder to notice yourself. |

| Re: Third valve blues........ I haven't noticed the 3rd valve to be particularly 'sticky' on the Ambassadors I have worked on (around 7 or so). It probably just needs a proper polishing, which a competent brass tech can do in about 3 minutes. GZ |

| Fortissimo User | Re: Third valve blues........ I'm guessing that all of the horns are "student" horns? If so, look for slightly distorted 3rd valve slides. That'll push on the valve casing just enough to bind a valve piston. A good shop can fix that up "cheap like Borscht". |

Ever notice that when cleaning student horns the "goo" that is in the 3rd valve? Everything spit into the horn travels from front to back - the 3rd valve just comes first. That also means more corrosion. The polishing that GZ mentions is the cure. |
