Thoughts on Blessing Flugels

Hello, I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on Blessing and Jupiter Flugel horns? Any information would be great. Thanks, Matt

Re: Thoughts on Blessing Flugels

Hi, Matt,

I hear the Blessing flugel is a big horn and takes a lot of air. But, if you are up to the task, I imagine it will do the trick for you. Personally, I like my Blessing B-141 Artist Cornet. It has a nice tone and is finished well. Has a nice case, too. I realize most people here would not care for Blessing instruments.

Eventually, you may want to play the Blessing and the Jupiter to make up your own mind which one is best for you.

Best wishes,

Lloyd

Re: Thoughts on Blessing Flugels

I keep hearing good things about the Jupiter flugels and when I tested a couple I took a tuner and they were both all all over the map. I tested two Blessings, one student line and its intonation was terrible and their pro line, it played very well and the intonation was very close. I have the student Yamaha and have looked for years to replace it but I can't find another flugel that plays so much better that it is worth the money to replace especially since I don't play it that often. When testing a horn always take a friend to give their opinion as to the sound out front of the horn and take a tuner. Dave

Dave: did you ever find a horn on which a tuner wasn't all over the place?

I love this quote...

The flugel is your friend,
The trumpet is your spouse,
Don't mix them up or
You may lose your house.

I think you can substitute "flugel" with "piccolo" and still have the same results. LOL

The Blessing Artist model flugelhorn is a very good horn for the money.

You can get B154RT for $899 at Woodwind/Brasswind.
Lacquer, Red Brass Bell, with 3rd valve trigger. (you definitely want to get a 3rd valve trigger)

I got the catalog in the mail today.

Some of my students have picked these up in the past for the quality for cost factor. If you don't want to spend a lot, this is a nice horn for the money. It is an aAmerican style flugel, larger bore size, similar to a Getzen, as opposed to a French stlye small bore.

The similar Jupiter model cost $40 more without the trigger, which is an extra option. i personally have never played a good Jupiter horn.

Re: Thoughts on Blessing Flugels

Brem - I sold my 3 pro horns to make one final purchase and have been using my wife's Yamaha Mike Vax [the only horn we both liked], I was pretty happy with it and one day a week ago I tried out a Schilke X3. I played both horns back and forth using the same mouthpiece and a tuner. When I use a tuner I look away, play the note and then look up at the tuner. the Schilke was very close on the intonation but what I didn't count on was that the M.V. was flat-sharp and on the money, in other words all over the place. up to then I was starting to question 'Do I really need another horn or will this M.V.
do what I want it to". we get so used to our horns that we automatically lip the horn into tune with out realizing it and when we try different horns they seem out of tune because we are playing them like our own horns and we lip them out with out realizing it. I have only been playing the M.V. for a couple of weeks so I haven't adjusted my playing yet. The Schilke didn't need me to adjust my playing to the horn. Dave

Re: Thoughts on Blessing Flugels

I hear you.
The guitar player in our band asked me to play a note so he could tune his guitar. I looked at him in disbelief. :) I'm lip bending all the time. I guess I've never played a horn that slotted pitch on.

The electronic tuner tells you NOTHING about the intonation of the instrument.
The problem is that the electronic tuner has to sort out (filter) the overtones away to get the most prominent frequency to tune to. When you remove the overtone structure, the tuning is meaningless. Conn used to have a strobotuner which could actually take the overtone structure also into account. Unfortunately this product has been discontinued for quite some time!
An electronic tuner should only be used to tune one note. The rest you need to learn "by ear".
A flugel has a very "interesting" dense overtone structure. The tuners readings are even less reliable than with a trumpet!
My thoughts on Blessing instruments is mixed. They sound nice, but the build quality is sometimes "iffy" (personal experience with a 4-valved flugelhorn). Play before you pay - and buy from a shop that offers service - just in case (this should apply to ANY purchase of high quality consumer goods!).

Re: Thoughts on Blessing Flugels

I prefer the Jupiter 846 to the Blessing, make sure you get a third slide trigger though. The Jupiter has a more traditional sized bore (.433). I believe smaller is better in the case of flug bore.
