Re: Trumpet for 15yr daughter

Have her keep the Yamaha at school and the V at home. You'll like the Z, but it will blow differently than the Bach, so don't push too hard.

Wayne Bergeron is a top notch player and person. He is a Maynard Ferguson disciple and owns the entire range of the instrument. Her getting to work with him is a great opportunity and will likely be very inspirational.

Sounds to me like you are both having fun, and that is what music is all about!

Re: Trumpet for 15yr daughter

wgt1234,

Thanks for the reply!

I still would be concerned about the instruments in the cages as this is a similar arrangement at our kids schools. What I am about to share with you, took place at a prominent middle school in an affluent area...

My other daughter has a nice Cannonball Global Big Bell Silver Plated Alto Sax and she had left it at school against my wishes because she forgot it.

Well, kids or teenagers being the way they are, somebody was jealous of her and that instrument and broke into the lockers and did some major damage to the horn! I was beyond furious and the band instructor at that time did everything to dismiss the responsibility and security issues and instead blamed the cheap pad lock, (it was mandatory to use the school locks! We couldn't provide our own!), the poor condition of the cage, (isn't it the responsibility of the school to keep them maintained?), and myself for allowing her to have such a nice instrument in the first place! My daughter was distraught as she worked her tail off to earn that horn and now she was being blamed for the damages???

Nearly $3500 later, We had the instrument repaired and also replaced! The instructor fought us throughout the ordeal and even graded my daughter down in spite even though she was a key soloist in the marching band, the jazz band and an honor student and all state honor band member every year!

There was another incident where the band room was broken into and the thieves were very selective and stole only the best instruments! Haynes and Sankyo Flutes, Piccolos, some Selmer and Yanigasawa saxes, A Bach 37 Trumpet, a Schilke and a Stomvi. Some newer percussion and keyboards along with sound gear and some other odds and ends. These were mostly new instruments purchased for the program along with a few owned by the other students.

After this last incident, the band director was let go and things improved greatly in the program! There were suspicions that the director was involved with the thefts and the instruments that were stolen began to surface later but in practically destroyed conditions!

Never trust anyone with your investments! If you are going to leave an instrument at a reheasal hall or school, make sure it is something that is of little value to you or your child!

Re: Trumpet for 15yr daughter

Kamakaze, You describe a horror. It sounds like something was greatly amiss. I hope the situation improves immediately.

I appreciate all the concern from everyone re storage, and will discuss with my daughter. For the first part of the year she will take the Yamaha in, and if it fits, she'll play it (and I get to play the Bach at home!) The Bach was smashed years ago when I lent it to a friend's son, so it's not pristine because our tech just bangs out the dents and doesn't re hammer the bell so as not to disturb the original tonality any more than necessary, it just plays fabulous, so it's kind of in cognito!!!

Veery - they had a great two days with WB, then performed at a festival he adjudicated about two weeks later.

Re: Trumpet for 15yr daughter

Veery, forgot to mention that Bergeron is about 1 year younger than me. He, like me, was inspired by Maynard at local concerts(me in Delaware, him in LA). I went the science/business route and WB moved up the trumpet ranks.

Moral of the story - those artists that go around the country and perform for high school kids are true inspirations. We need more of them!!!!

wgt1234,

It doesn't matter if the case has a lock or not. They will still break in. I watched it happen at school. They used the same key from a violin case. It worked. I couldn't stop them in time.
It is possible.

Re: Trumpet for 15yr daughter

My locker mate in elementary school had a habit of leaving it unlocked. Once someone took my 1946 22B out and tossed it down the stairs-- and those old Conn cases don't protect the horn too well when the padding is worn. The bell had already been krinkled and repaired after the original owner dropped it. After taking the spill down the stairs, a HOLE appeared in the bell.

Sometimes it makes you want to take a shotgun to the people who do this!

Re: Trumpet for 15yr daughter

Note, check your home owners insurance. They may cover the horn when at school. I really suggest bringing the horn home every day. If someone wants it, they,ll get to it. No matter how it's stored. If it's awkward, there are cases with shoulder straps. The bach would be hard to replace. If you would like to restore the horn, dentwise check out Osmun brass. They can do it and not affect the horns sound.

I have a paper on trumpet maintainance I can send you, Just e mail me.

The locks on the cases were so bad!
I recall picking open the locks on many cases that kids would forget their key for and just using a simple paper clip!!!
