Trumpet for 15yr daughter

Greetings to all Trumpetmaster members. When I started playing, we were lucky to have a local music store, now the whole world can help with decisions. I haven't picked up a horn since high school, but...

My 100lbs. daughter recently made our high school jazz band(she's freshman, but likely won't grow a lot, she'll never be 170, like I was at graduation). The band plays pretty tough stuff, and will spend an afternoon with a well known So. Cal. trumpet artist later this Spring. The band will play about a dozen "gigs" this Spring.

She has a Yamaha starter horn, but when she made this band I dug out my 1973 vindabona model 72 and had it overhauled. She loves it, but I wonder if she should be using a smaller bell? Would there be a lot of difference putting her into a 37 or 43? She and her buddies really like the sound of the MLV72.

She's inspired me, so we need another good horn anyway.

Thanks for any comments.

Re: Trumpet for 15yr daughter

Those Vindabonas are GREAT horns. I see no need to put your daughter on another horn. Size doesn't have much to do with things, in my opinion, which, of course, as a trumpet player is not so humble, but....

One of the best players in my area when I was in school was a 5' 3" gal who could play the socks off any of the guys around.

Let her play the Vindabona, expecially as you say she loves the horn.

Michael

Re: Trumpet for 15yr daughter

The Bach Vindabonas were disigned to play Wagner, etc. They have a dark sound. This should not be a problem unless she finds herself playing loud just to be "heard". As long as she is comfortable with the volume she has to play at, she'll be fine. The Yamaha is a very good horn. Try this, have her play each horn for a week and pick the one that she sounds the best on.

I'd stick with the 72 also, they are good horns. I think the only difference between a stock ML 72 and the Vindabonas is the tuning slide, the ML tuning slide is .459 all the way through, the Vindabona starts out .453 in the top leg and ends up .459 in the bottom leg, giving the horn a slightly darker sound.

Re: Trumpet for 15yr daughter

I bet the sound on Vindabona is sweet. She'll have a special horn. Help her with some digging online about the horn.

I never owned a Vindabona but I did have a 72/43 gold brass Bach eons ago. Played it lots and liked it lots.

Neat horn your daughter's V.

Re: Trumpet for 15yr daughter

Thank you all. I needed the validation, with so much technical stuff on the web I was wondering if the horn might hinder her. She sounds so much warmer than the other 9th grade horns (concert last week for concert band), and blends great with the Bachs played by the other jazz band members. It will be fun to watch her grow, she is a serious musician already with contemporary keyboard, so this is a treat and brings back great memories.

As you all have said, she has a wonderful horn, and it was dad's (she won't try my Jet-Tone though!). Guess I won't be seeing my Bach any time soon, but as was said the Yamaha is very nice, not as clunky as I remember my Olds to have been.

Thank again.

Re: Trumpet for 15yr daughter

Since you want to play too, and you are in So Cal, take a trip to Anaheim and visit the Kanstul factory. The model 1503 is much like a Bach 72, but you might find another model that rings your or her chimes.

Re: Trumpet for 15yr daughter

If she starts playing lead, she will need a brighter sounding horn. Other than that, the Vindabona already has the notes stored from the previous owner. It should just about play itself!

Thanks, Rowuk. You're right, very few good notes have been used!

Re: Trumpet for 15yr daughter

I would let her keep playing the Vin and buy yourself a nice shinny new horn. Thats what I would tell my wife.
