Trumpet Customization?

Is there any way that I can walk into a music instrument dealer and say, "Hey, I'd like a trumpet that can play classical but more edged toward jazz. I want a high quality horn and I'd like to see my customization options like valve speed and visual things. I prefer a Bach Strad, but I know they might not be as good with jazz performers."? Could I ask him that and him find me a good horn for the job? Is it possible to personally customize a Bach Strad? I need to find out all I can about these trumpets before I actually fork out the cash to buy one.
Thanks for reading

Yes. Folks will build what you want.

The places were I've bought horns allow me to return it if I'm unhappy.

Good Luck

Tell us your location so we can recommend you a customizer brass craftsman. If you are ready to make big trips to get you custom job, you will of course have more options. But before going anywhere you should have a very precise idea on what you are searching for in order to same time when testing the customized horns and be able to get the best from your customizer.

Re: Trumpet Customization?

A custom builder will try to do what you want, but I'd forget about trying to get anything customized by a manufacturer like Bach. They're too busy to do custom work. I tried to order a custom cornet from Bach a few years ago and couldn't even find a dealer willing to order one for me because of the excessive lead time.

If the dealer is honest, he would tell you that the hardware has NOTHING to do with Jazz, Classical, or Country - it is the player. It is possible to customize any horn, the question is why? I am pretty much convinced that most custom manufacturers know more than we EVER will about what works and many of our "options" have been designed to be sonically harmless.

The only meaningful way to find out about a horn is to play it for an extended time. EVERY quality instrument is suitable for every genre of music. The only option that I have never seen is your "valve speed" one. Generally valves are designed to be "fast" and "smooth".
