![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: trumpet for funk music Shalom, Ramirez, and welcome to TM! Your Bach should work just fine. The mouthpiece you use and your sound man have such a huge influence on the horn section's sound than compared to your trumpet's intrinsic sound spectrum that if you are happy with the response and intonation of your current trumpet, you'll be fine. Back in my funk days (putting myself through music school in the late 70's, gulp!), the brand of horns wasn't near as much an issue as the monitor mix and microphone (Shure 57, for us). I used a King Symphony (spray painted white so the lighting guy loved me!) with a Getzen 900S bell braced with electrician's tape) and my C trumpet (for a couple TOP tunes and a Jon Faddis tune), and the other trumpeter (Duane Floch, Hoffer Symfoniker, Rekenzie Brass, and a fair amount of L.A. studio gigs) played his stock Bach 37. Much more important than the individual's sound was the group sound and rhythmic integrity; we were able to get into each other's heads to the point it was scary! When we trumpeters were reunited in the early 90's in Hof, Germany for La Mer, we got comments from many of the orchestra players about how amazingly, intuitively well we played together. Playing Funk doesn't hurt. Have fun!

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: trumpet for funk music I agree with VB, There is no "standard" funk sound that would limit your choices of horns. The wind group has to work and that is more dedication and personality than hardware. There is nothing wrong with your Bach just because it was built in the 80s. A "vintage" horn is only of interest to other trumpet players (and the suggestion probably came from there) - the rest of your audience and the band are only interested in your musicality. That needs to shine through regardless of what is glued to your chops!

![]() ![]() | Re: trumpet for funk music Jerry Hey and Gary Grant played a Bach in the 80s when they recorded all those E,W & F hits. Chuck Findley played a Calicchio in those years. The Hey horns recorded 1000s of pop and funk songs in the '70s, '80s, '90s and still do. I believe Jerry Hey plays a Bach 3C, so no secrects there either. Just hard work and dedication. |
