Maynard always sounded great on whetever he played. Once again, any mouthpiece can be good. It all depends on if it works for you. -cw-

| Piano User | Re: trumpets that bear famous artist names trumpets that bear artists names are typically instruments that the artist has had a hand in designing. Most of these horns will be of the same quality as the flagship horns made by the manufacturer. The question is whether the specs and attributes that the name player needs in a horn are suitable for you.... MY first pro horn was a Holton MF horn (early 70s). Great horn, well built, totally inappropriate for me I used to have a Bobby Shew yamaha. Excellent horn. Very close, but again wasn't really right for me. I've heard horror storis about the Sandoval horns (are they Leblancs?), but then, I would never buy a Leblanc horn anyway.... bigtiny |

Horner - What horn are you using that Bobby Shew mouthpiece with? For me - the Bobby Shew flugel and mouthpiece pair very well together. However with my Kanstul 1525 - prefer to use a GR 65FL. Also have a Bach 5C FL - but not my fav flugel mouthpiece - store tossed that in with the Kanstul when I bought it.... Absolutely prefer the GR of all 3 mthpcs - it was one of those - "Wow - this fits me like a glove" moments. That said, when I try mixing them - I find I don't like the GR with the Shew horn or the Shew mouthpiece with the Kanstul 1525. But as always this is all personal preference - gotta find what works for you. Best of luck

![]() | Re: trumpets that bear famous artist names I love my Schilke, but i find that many times the artist models are too focused.... It doesn't have any symphonic or ensemble characteristics....all bright and jazzy all the time. Its a great horn, but i may not keep it for very much longer.

HORNER - You are ahead in the game - you've inherited a nice flugel and mouthpiece. I'm just a mere amateur - but I found high range more challenging on the flugelhorn in general vs trumpet (especially on the Bach flugel I played in college....). The beauty of the sound of the flugel isn't in the stratosphere in my humble opinion. If the Shew mouthpiece feels good - and its just your concern with range - I wouldn't spend the extra money on another mouthpiece for now - just work (and practice) with the mouthpiece you've got. If you have the time - never hurts to try other mouthpieces - but as I'm sure you well know - takes a while to really get to know a new mouthpiece. Best of luck
