Tuning slide spacers on Bach Chicago C

    Hi Everyone!

So, I have always had a problem with Eb, E and especially F (top of the staff) on C trumpets. If I don't hit them square, they split. In january I purchased a Bach Chicago. It seemed like the more I practiced the worse it got. It got to the point where I just didn't play C trumpet at all in the last few months. I finally started playing the horn again. It seemed to be better when I first picked it up. After about a week of playing the horn the problem came back and got worse every day. Last friday I picked the horn up not realizing the main tuning slide was pushed all the way in. I went through my warm-up. The problem was gone. Completely! I could not get it to happen. Then I realized my slide was in. I pulled it out about a half inch(it's a really sharp horn), THE PROBLEM WAS BACK!

This got me thinking. In college, Hickman said sometimes when this problem happens, putting spacers in the leadpipe to fill in the gap will help. So, I ran to the local music store, got some pipe and started cutting spacers. I put one in the top and the problem was better but not totally fixed. I cut one for the bottom and it went away completely. This is going to be a pain in the butt when I play in something that is a little high. I have cut several lengths of pipe and I have taken a long, skinny, flat screw driver and bent the end to get these pieces of pipe out.

I am amazed! I thought this was just voo-doo. When I take them out the problem is there and when they are in, I can't for the life of me get it to happen again. I thought I would share my experience in case someone else is struggling with the same issue.

Note: If you try this, make sure the pipe you get is the correct size and go to home depot and buy the correct size pipe cutter. Don't try to use a hacksaw. You will never get a clean cut.

What would you like pictures of? Since this happens inside the horn, i can't really show them in action. You'll have to use your imagination.

Are these to eliminate the gap in the tuning slide? I guess once these are in you can't readily change your tuning?

Well, I can pull out. I just have to know the situation I am walking into. If I am unsure, I'll leave them out until I figure out where my slide needs to be. Then I can put the correct size spacer in. The problem is not bad if there is a little bit of a gap. It just gets bad when there is a half inch gap.

I certainly hope that they do not "corrode into place".
René Spada rebuilds the Bach C with a tuning bell and you push the tuning slide all the way in, so that would also substantiate your theory. Eclipse even goes so far as to make the leadpipe one piece to the valve cluster.

Pictures of the pieces you cut. Isn't there a user by the name of Nivibri or something like that who has sold something similar on here and TH in the past?

My spada has such spacers as for some reason the outer tube was shorter than needed. No particular problems with corossion so far (after 6 or 7 years)
