| Pianissimo User | Valve Guard? About a month ago...I put a brown leather bach valve guard on my bach strad... I took it off today and everyplace that was in contact with the guard has turned yellow. It looks like the fabric wore off the silver. Has this happend to anyone else and if did you do anything about it? |

| Re: Valve Guard? It's tarnish. A Yamaha valve guard did it with my Bach, due to moisture buildup. I now use a Leather Specialties valve guard, which has a plastic liner in between a layer of leather and felt, and I have no tarnish problems. All you can do is get some silver polish and polish it away. |

| Re: Valve Guard? That's why I stopped using valve guards. Easier just to keep the horn clean and polished for me; then to deal with the mess a valve guard leaves. |

| Re: Valve Guard? i have a valve guard that i think has fabric on the inside. i used it on my nickel plated yamaha trumpet and it didn't cause any tarnish. i just got a silver bach strad that has some silver wear around the valves. i want to use the valve guard on it so it doesn't get worse, but i have heard bad things about valve guards, so do you guys think that because it didn't cause problems on my yamaha it well be ok on my strad? |

| Re: Valve Guard? Tennis, Nickel doesn't tarnish, so the valve guard wouldn't cause an oxidation issue on a nickel plated finish. I have used a valve guard on and off over the years, and haven't had issues, but I also do not have acidic skin that reacts badly with the finish on horns. Some people have very acidic hands that can damage the finish on their horns, in some cases very quickly. A valve guard can help prevent some of that, but you need to regularly take off the guard and clean the horn's valve block. If it's a silver horn, apply a good silver polish...one like Tarnishield or one of the others that also helps prevent tarnishing. For Lacquer or Nickel, clean the valve block and use a polishing cloth appropriate to the finish. If you don't do that, the oils from your skin along with dirt and valve oil can get underneath and damage the finish as well as make the back of the valve guard quite nasty. Greg |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Valve Guard? real leather is "tanned" to make it durable. Tannic acid is used to do this and that reacts with the silver, tarnishing it. The tarnish can be polished away and is much better than the wear that mechanical friction and sweat from your hands would cause. The only possible issue would be the acoustic damping that may be caused. If one believes that weighted bottom caps and other tune up items make a big difference, maybe this does too! |
