Valve slide ring customization

I just picked up a Besson 609 that I am going to be using as my canvas for customization/tinkering projects.

The first thing I want to do is get rid of the adjustable 3rd valve slide ring and add something more permanent as well as possibly adding a ring or saddle to the 1st valve slide. I have seen a couple horns with done very simply, but I'd like something with a little more flair.

Has anyone done or seen anything interesting that I might consider?

Well, there are a bunch of ideas in that one photo. But, I hope you are a skilled fabricator. None of those look like a beginners project. If you are not experienced, buy a 'junker' for cheap and practice unsoldering and re-soldering the braces, ferrules, etc. so that you can figure out how to do it with no loose connections and no remnants of solder left over. It is a very tricky skill.

I should have been more clear...I won't personally be doing the work...I am a tremendous hack with it comes to fabrication. I can barely solder two wires together let alone fabricate and install customizations on an instrument! I am really looking for creative ideas (another area where I am horribly deficient) to have implemented by a skilled professional.

Re: Valve slide ring customization

Well, I decided to throw caution to the wind and have a go at this myself. With absolutely no experience or skill in fabrication, little imagination for creative design and even less patience, I broke out the Dremel and soldering gear and had a go at it.

The results are passable. I sketched out a bunch of designs on paper first and then settled on a simple design that I think flows well with the simple lines of the trumpet. The fabrication of the extension from the 3rd valve slide was surprisingly easy. However, as one of the reigning world's worst solderer, the mess I created attaching the extension to the slide and the ring (which I purchased from Kanstul) to the extension clearly makes for a true hatched job. I like to think if it as adding character or mojo to the horn I may do some cleanup on the solder and also cut off the parts of the ring brace that extend beyond the extension...or maybe not.

If I wasn't working on a horn I purchased for next to nothing, I might have brought this to a professional, but it was a fun project and I learned a lot.

Here are some photos I just snapped with my phone....

Not a bad start. Keep going. It looks like you are developing both design and fabrication skills.

Thumbs up Re: Valve slide ring customization

As CBK said, you are developing skills and skills come from experience.

Keep up the good work!

Re: Valve slide ring customization

I gotta say I like it - it's a simple solution to a problem to which some have offered unnecessarily "sophisticated" solutions; no extraneous ornamentation just a low-tech, clean lines answer. I think I'll try it on one of my "tinkering " horns. Good work.
