| Preface: Please...no slams on Mark Van Cleave. I've read the posts on his business dealings. I have spoken with Mark in the past and found him to be respectful and pleasant. I would be dealing with a retailer who has the horns in stock (Dr. Jim at www.ibowtie.com). I am looking for information regarding the trumpets, not the manufacturer. Now to the question - Has anybody played the MV2 side-by-side with the MV4? How do they compare in terms of tone, response, projection and blow? I currently play a King Legend large bore, and love the blow, tone (a bit dark and very warm) and projection, but my articulation tends to get a little lost. I want something that can be played in just about any venue (Big Band, Musical Theatre, Orchestral, Brass Ensemble) since the gigs I get span all of those. The Van Cleave horns are especially interesting due to the current pricing on the horns, the comments I've seen regarding how they play, and one sound file I've heard (of an MV2). I realize there are a LOT of great horns out there...for example the NYTC line of horns, Eclipse, etc...but I have a very limited budget. FYI...used Bach Strads are not an option. I've played MANY and liked none. That's just me. I am really looking for specific feedback on the Van Cleave trumpets. Thanks!!! | Re: Van Cleave MV2 and MV 4 Trumpets Greg... one thing to consider re: your articulation on that King.. sharper rim into the cup on your mpc...and maybe even only on that horn. Still.. enjoy your search. |

Hate is something I reserve for other trumpet players stealing work from me............................ Mr. Riddler, can you provide some content - when and how long did you play test these horns? What mouthpieces did you try? What didn't you like? We are very interested in the bloody DETAILS, not just slams. |

| Re: Van Cleave MV2 and MV 4 Trumpets I tried 3 MV tpts. at Dillon Music a few months back. (Can't remember which models). One felt excellent, one was pretty good, and my mouthpiece didn't fit into the receiver of third one (which I found strange). I think that (like anything else) you should try as many as possible to find one the suits you. Tony |

| New Friend | Re: Van Cleave MV2 and MV 4 Trumpets Hello Guys- My name is Phil Rinaldi. I live in Garwood, NJ (about 20 minutes outside of NYC), Mark Van Cleave is my mentor and I am an Artist Representative for his horns. I have been meaning to join the ranks here at Trumpet Master, so I guess now is as good a time as ever. Here is what I posted on TH (Greg, I know we allready spoke): The "Preference Guide" on the website http://vancleavetrumpets.com/trumpets.html is pretty accurate. I find the tone on the MV4 to be a little darker than the MV2. They both respond quite similiar. If your looking for more feedback, try the lightweight bell. The blow is just slightlly more open on the MV4. The projection (probablly the number one reason Mark designed the horns) is amazing and almost exactly the same on all the horns (except the MV3). My gut reccomendation would be the MV2, which is also the horn I use (except that I have the leadpipe opened up all the way). It is very versitile. If you need more information, feel free to E-Mail me at phil@philrinaldi.com or if you are going to be in the New Jersey area at any point, I would be happy to help you out personally. End quote. With that said, if anyone needs any additional help...please E-Mail me...or post on TM and I will try and catch the post. Tony K- first I'd like to say that you are a great trumpet player who I've watched live dozens of times and always enjoy it more and more. I would love to get together one day. The problem with the receiver has been addressed. We did realize some mouthpieces were not fitting in some of the horns. This was due to Mark's venturi designs. If you need anything else, E-Mail me at phil@philrinaldi.com. I would be happy to bring you my horns to try and maybe work on getting you one to try for a couple of weeks from Indiana. Also, Scott Wendholt is testing out an MV3 (soon to be an MV1L), so if you catch him around...maybe you can give that one a blow. |
