Re: Van Cleave trumpets

There has been quite a bit of discussion on these horns on trumpet herald. I would carefully research these horns and Van Cleave's business practices before investing money.

Re: Van Cleave trumpets

I tried an MV1, MV2, and MV3 at Dillon Music in Woodbridge N.J. I liked the MV2. It played nicely. I wouldn't replace my Schilke B1 with one, but they're relatively inexpensive so I feel that they are good horns for the money.

Re: Van Cleave trumpets

I got to play one of their Bb's, c's, pocket, and flugel just this weekend. They were ok. I would play one first before you bought. I did get to play a phaeton pocket trumpet that they just came out with as well. It was actually quite nice, and I believe relatively inexpensive.

Re: Van Cleave trumpets

My name is Phil Rinaldi. I live about 15 miles outside of New York City in Garwood, New Jersey

I play the MV2 with a very open leadpipe.

There are many things I love about my horn:

1- I think the design is hip. Very simple, but hip.
2- It's center and resonance are better than any horn I have ever played.
3- High G actually slots. (This is due to the bell design.)
4- It is very in tune.
5- It is very even in all registers.
6- I can take it from p to fffff and the sound will not distort.

You can check out all of the details about the horns here:

Van Cleave Professional Trumpets

The horns can only be purchased through dealers. Our "flagship" dealer is Dillon Music in Woodbridge, NJ. The horns can be seen online:

http://www.dillonmusic.com

or at their store. (They usually have a complete set).

My brief overview:

MV1- Great all around horn. Similiar to a Bach 37.
MV1L- Great lead or concert band horn.
MV2- Has the most decibals and can make a great lead horn in the right person's hands.
MV2L- The most popular lead horn.
MV3- Great resonance, but room for more nuance. Jazz horn.
MV4- Symphonic horn.
MVPR- Fun little pocket trumpet.
MVC1- Very popular C Trumpet. Has a very dark sound. Sold out of these at ITG.
MVF1- Standard Flugel but with two venturi. One is the classic flugel, and the other is tapered like a trumpet. Brighter, but makes for an easier switch.

Anyway...if anyone has any questions; feel free to E-Mail me at phil@philrinaldi.com or post here.

If anyone is in the area, I would be happy to show you the horns I have at home or meet you at Dillon Music to help you out.

Re: Van Cleave trumpets

Make sure you call ahead to Dillon's. I was there about 2 months ago to look at the Van Cleave pocket trumpets and they were out of stock at that particular time.

Re: Van Cleave trumpets

Hello All,

I am returning to the trumpet after a 35 year absence. It is truly a job trying to get back what I once had. I just purchased a Van Cleave trumpet from a pawn shop but it has no markings other than Van Cleave stamped on the leadpipe. It's serial # 1000.

I've done a bit of research and it looks from all the pics I've seen to be a MV4. It's a gold and silver horn. How can I determine what model I actually have?

Thanks in advance,

Casterja

Equipment:
Getzen 700 Eterna II
Van Cleve MV4 ????

Re: Van Cleave trumpets

This horn is an MV1; sort of.
It is a student prototype with a two piece version of the bell and sold to a college in South Carolina.
It has a very open leadpipe.
It really is a great horn; especially for the money.
If you need anything else, feel free to E-Mail me.

Phil,
can you ask Mark about what happened to Bears CD? 2 years and not answering E'mails is not good news - even if the axe is OK.
