![]() | Re: whats the best pocket trumpet? Ray's put you on a good track. I played the Pocket Max at this years ITG conference at UMASS. It is very nice and reasonably priced. I have a Jupiter that I bought real cheap a few years ago. It's a good bargain and plays pretty well, but the intonation is kind of hard to manage. There are also a few others out there - I think there is still a Benge available and Kanstul also has one. If I recall, they're both more than 2X the Pocket Max. |

The bell is smaller than a "real" trumpets so the sound is not quite as nice. Its function is to keep me playing when I am on the road and it is good enough for that.

![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: whats the best pocket trumpet? What a timely post! I am actually evaluating two pocket trumpets right now. One is called "Marcato" and the other is called "Carol" and is sold through Brasswind. According to one retailer I spoke with, they are the same horn, or at least made in the same factory. I can tell you that, while quite similar, they are "wrapped" differently, and the price difference is substantial. The "Carol" is being offered to me for around $425, and the "Marcato" is probably closer to $750. Both play surprisingly well, though at this point I am giving the slight nod to "Marcato". I'm not sure it is worth the extra $300, though, especially for my needs (it is going on tour with me in my suitcase, while my "real" horns travel in the instrument trunks. That way, I can practice in the hotel rooms and have a carry-on that isn't my trumpet). Seriously, both Chris Still and I were very surprised at the openness and playability of these horns. J |
