Re: whats your fav horn and why? My UMI Benge 3X because of all the pro horns I tried they were more alike then my Bach mouthpieces (which no one can tell apart without back to back comparisons) and it only cost $500. Way cool. :) Fits right in with my band's line of Bachs (NY to modern), Schilke, Yammie, and Conn 12B. No problem. Really liked the Vintage 1 though when play testing with Bach mouthpieces.

Re: whats your fav horn and why? My favorite horn isn't exactly mine.... it was an OLD paris-made Besson Meha. Great responsiveness, decent slotting, and a fantastic tone. It was my private teacher/band director's instrument.... my 80's Strad 72 was in the shop, so he let my play it one day during a rehearsal. He got it for $120. I'm about to buy it for $500.

The right trumpet needn't be expensive or even "professional." In my opinion, Getzen offers the finest value in American made trumpets, and are worth looking into. The best advice is to try as many instruments as you can, and keep an open mind when trying them out. Have fun! Last edited by Vulgano Brother : 12-13-2007 at 12:45 PM. | |

Re: whats your fav horn and why? For a Bb trumpet, my fave is my '77 Bach Strad ML 43/25. Terrific horn, very even throughout the register, great intonation. That probably doesn't help you in the search for a new one, other than to suggest you try a few out, say a 43 and 37, to see if you like either. A lot of on-line dealers will let you try horns on approval, so you pay shipping only if you don't keep any (although that could get expensive!). If you don't have to get a new one, there are deals to be had on good used horns through places like Dillon Music.

Re: whats your fav horn and why? Calicchio 1s2. Response is instantaneous - blow resistance is perfect -- allowing precise soft playing as well as lighting it up. The sound is crisp, beautiful, and malleable. I got turned on to it by a guy who described the sound as a having a core with a halo of overtones around it. You hear so much about them being a 'lead' horn, but it's a great, versatile trumpet. \ Galen
