Where to get valve work done

I've given up on my Schilke. I've taken it to several repairmen over the last few years to get the valves working nice, but with little success. The fourth valve is fit so tight that, unless I give it a serious cleaning every week, it gunks up and is completely immovable. I can't claim to take perfect care of my horns, but I clean them regularly and generally keep up on maintenance.

The instrument needs some serious work, and I'm wondering where would the best place to send it would be. Does the Schilke factory do repair work? I know Ken Larson is doing some great work, but I think he's concentrating on his own instruments. Any recommendations would really be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jimi

Send it to Steve Winans aka Dr Valve. He used to fit valves at Schilke back in the day and that's his specialty. Visit www.drvalve.com

Yes, Schilke started doing outside work again a few years back. I sent them my old '70's P5-4 and they did a great job bringing it up to date.

Contact Phil Baughman at Schilke... nice guy!

Good luck.

Hey Jimi,

Hope all is well.

I second both of the above opinions.

1) Send it to Schilke. They are doing repairs on Schilke horns again.

2) Or send it to Dr. Valve. As was said, he used to work there for a LONG time.

You also can't go wrong with Charlie Melk, but why not try sending it to Schilke / Schilke's former valve guy?

Good luck man,
David

I know Steve Wynans, I used to play with him in Chicago. I know he worked for Schilke. Good for him.

I'm another big fan of Steve (Dr. Valve). He rebuilt the valves on both my Bb and piccolo and did great work.
