Which Would You Choose....

..... between a 1966 Bach Strad lacquered cornet in good condition and a 1999 Bach 184MLS shepherds crook cornet (silver) in like new condition? My only horn these days is a Burbank Benge trumpet (plays great) but would like to have a really nice cornet also. Would the 1966 Strad cornet ever have any collectible value? Is there really much difference in the sound of a Bach shepherds crook cornet? I need to make this decision very soon.

Thanks.

John P has a spectacular aura about
I'd go with the shepherds crook. They tend to give a more mellow, characteristic cornet sound. But that's just me.

That is the general consensus. The Shepherd's Crook provides a bit more resistance and is a bit more mellow. Most British Brass Bands want shepherd's crook cornets for that reason (although most are not real picky as long as it has a cornet sound).

If you have the chance to play both of them, I would do that. Buy the one you like the best.

You really need to play the two horns and determine it that way. I definitely prefer the looks of a shepherds crook cornet, but if I found a long model that plays better, I would go with it.

A 1966 Bach....or sthe 1999 Bach....
Hey....TOM TURNER...WHERE ARE YOU...ON THIS ONE?

As far as the 1966 Bach, as a collector horn...hummm? Personally, I would hardly think that we could call this a truly vintage collector horn, however, it still amazes me just how much $$$$ some of these horn during the mid 60s and 70 seem to bring on the used market will bring.

You already have a really nice Benge trumpet (I will never forget the beautiful sound and friendly feel of my old long gone Benge 3X). Although another sad story, except to say, Bach had a really wide range of quality issues. Some horns were awesome...others...well not so awesome...almost down right awful.
With that in mind...I would go for the new 1999 Cornet without question.

Keep in mind just how nice a really short model cornet sounds...and best of all due to its short length really feels great when using mutes...etc.
