Yamaha 8310Z

OK

So I tried out my friends new Bobby Shew horn (brass) and I loved it soo much. I only used it for like 10 min in the practice room and I was actually pretty close to using it that very same day for an audition. (Decided against that one)

Does anyone have one? How are they structured? is it true that they are more conical (like a flugel or cornet) but because they are so light they can really zing in the upper register? My double Cs were a little nicer (well they aren't mine really, cause I don't quite own those yet)

Opinions?

Eric

Dave Mickley is on a distinguished road
the soloist in a big band I play in was trying out a Z horn Friday night. He plays a Callichio and has trying this new horn for about a week. I asked him on break what he thought and he said he thought that he would buy it. He said it played better and easier at low volume and he didn't have to fight the intonation as much and it didn't wear him out. He sounded great on it but didn't quite have the "edge" to it like his old horn. of course he can make any horn sound good but he said it was easier on the "Z" horn, it is an 8310 custom. Dave

Nice horns...

I had one for quite a few years. I liked it, but optied into something different as I found I was a bit bright on it.

Results will vary from user to user, of course.

The 8310 IMO is a far superior horn in every aspect than the 6310Z, especially in warmth of sound and feedback behind the horn.

There's also a modified 8310Z called the 8340EM Eric Miyashiro model that's available only in Japan. The horn I tried was chosen by Eric himself. For me, it added a lot of depth to my tone, and was very consistent in its feel and intonation in all registers. The low register really flowed out of the horn. And the high register . . . I can't talk about it without getting religious.

I just tried an 8340EM at Rayburn's in Boston and it is the best Yamaha I've ever played. Very smooth, even sound. I crescendoed from ppp to fff and the sound was consistent throughout. The sound is distinct and, to my ears, has more character than I hear in most Yamahas. Unfortunately its 3 grande... :(

8340em at Washington Music

Check out washington music for the 8340em. A friend of mine just picked one up from them for around $1,500.
