Yamaha Chicago Bb Versatility

I'm just wondering if there are players here who use, or know others who use, the Yamaha Chicago Bb for settings other than orchestra? I got a chance to try one of these horns the other day and really dug it, but since it was designed to be an orchestral horn I'm wondering about its versatility. Are there any jazz or commercial players using this horn? Any insight would be great, thank you.

Re: Yamaha Chicago Bb Versatility

The "jazz / commercial" players I have come across who are using the new Yamahas are playing the NY model. Some have tried the WB model and didn't like it as much But those are just the people I know. I don't think it matters which model you play on as long as it works for you.

Re: Yamaha Chicago Bb Versatility

A good trumpet is a good trumpet. The Chicago would be great for any situation depending on the player. I had it narrowed down to a Chicago and my LA a couple weeks ago. In the end I chose the LA, but either horn would work well for any situation for me.

As Wayne Bergeron once told me, it doesn't matter what the horn is designed to do. If it works for you, play it. He nearly blew the windows out of the music building in Milwaukee playing the most gigantic double D on my Bach 37, which is an "orchestral" leaning trumpet. Right after that note he said, "Wow, this is a great horn........what is it?"

It's not the horn ;)

(at least when it comes to Wayne Bergeron!)

Absolutely correct. He was showing that it isn't the horn that makes you play well, and that it doesn't matter what horn you play....if it's good, it's good. No matter if it's a Bach, Kanstul, Yamaha prototype, or whatever.

Re: Yamaha Chicago Bb Versatility

I found the Chicago Bb to be a little "thicker" sounding than the NY model. Both are really good trumpets. Whatever you do. Try do play a whole bunch of different makes/models. Not every horn/mouthpiece is right for everyone.

Re: Yamaha Chicago Bb Versatility

I have a Chicago B-flat and C. I use the B-flat on big bands, orchestra and quintets. No problem in any setting. Great horns.!!

Re: Yamaha Chicago Bb Versatility

Not trying to start rumors here, but...

I've heard that Yamaha designed the Chacago C and then used that instrument as the starting point for the Chicago B-flat. Has anybody else heard that?

I don't currently own a B-flat I like. I just commented to my roomate today that I've played 3 recitals since entering college and haven't used B-flat on any of them. Perhaps the Yamaha Chicago Bb would be a better fit because its design is based on a C trumpet. Any thoughts? (Other than I should stop worrying about equipment and just play the dang music?)

Re: Yamaha Chicago Bb Versatility

Jimi,
One of the ideas behind the Chicago and NY b-flats was to create a horn that would be easy to transition to from your C trumpet and the C trumpets were the starting point for this process. I highly recommend gonig to try some. Now I just need to raise a few thousand dollars.
